Cex... possibly the best high street retailer for games!

One of these just opened in Portsmouth a couple of months ago. I wouldn't say I was an avid gamer by any means but I love my Wii :D and getting a few bits and pieces for it to pass the time.

Anyway went in there this weekend and they are selling pre-owned games for a fraction of places like Game and other well known gaming places.

I got the Wario Ware game (the one with tonnes of mini games) and Paper Mario for £20. Excellent condition, went down the road and one of these each is £20 a piece pre-owned.

Also do amazing rates on computing, CDs and DVDs. If there's one nearby it's really good. And on their website they show you how much they'll pay for various things.:T

My new favourite shop!
Lloyds CC: £5150.73
Lloyds OD: [STRIKE]£2500[/STRIKE] £2224.44
Ex-employers personal loan: [STRIKE]£300[/STRIKE] £250

We've got one about 20minutes away, however I will never shop there!

I've been there a few times for different things and have never had an easy, pleasant transaction with them. When attempting to buy games from there they either are unable to find the cd (far too many times this has happened) or the cd has been too damaged to play. On the one time I bought a HDD from there I got it home to find the control board was shot.

We also have a local GameStation (not to be confused with Game - they are entirely different shops) and I have never had a problem with them. Gamestation are usualy (6-7/10) cheaper than CEX, they have better trade prices and usualy (7-8/10) a better cash price than CEX. They also do multiple offers on there games - such as 5for£10, 4for£20 etc depending on age and popularity of the games)

Each to their own and all that but I will never advise anyone to go to a CEX store.

  • Hi,

Yeah, I know what you mean - I've picked up quite a few rare retro games myself from them that would have cost a LOT more elsewhere. Sadly the nearest one near me is a bit hard to get to (no car!).

I can also recomend Swallow Games if there's one nearby. I managed to find a copy of Shenmue 2 for the Xbox and the original Shining Force (Mega Drive) quite cheap. They can even order titles in from other shops.

It's really annoying that since Game took over Gamestation all their rare retro titles have vanished from the shelves and most of the time the only game shops that I come across belong to Game. There's no point hunting around diffrent Game stores since they all have the same new games, and the pre-owns are all the same price no matter which one you go in!

I want the import shops back!

Edit: Sorry, quick question - were they the Wii remakes you picked up or the Gamecube originals?

There are 2 branches of CEX located in Birmingham city centre. I have never bought games from them, but have sold 3 mobile phones and they are fab. You have to get there early though before they run out of money.

My perception is that CEX are a bit pricey.

I bought a pre owned copy of Fifa 08 from game recently from Game for the princely sum of £3.99 recently. It was a great price and we have had many a very very late night playing 4 player sessions.

    Game bought Gamestation ??

Do you mean they bought the shops or they actually bought out the company ? We've just had a Gamestation shop open in our local shopping center and they still have all the greatness the old ones had and there is certainly more pre-owned than new titles on there shelves.

Edit: Oh Blimey!! They have bought them out  Will have to keep an eye on our local store now and see what happens.

    I agree.

My local CEX has an iPod Touch 16Gb "Grade A" for £215. It's £205 new and delivered on Amazon.

The prices for a lot of stuff never seem to be altered. They stay at a certain price for months and months.

yeah Game own Gamestation but they are run as two seperate companies.

My local CEX sometimes has games cheaper but often I find that they are the same price or higher for second hand games than you can buy a brand new one for from another game shop! Their customer service is appaling I always have to wait ages to be served and if you want cash you have to get there when they open and even then you are not guaranteed to get it and like someone else says half the time they cant find the discs.

I just print off a trade price quote and take it to gamestation as they beat each trade in price by a pound and buy the games cheaper from there, makes more MSE sense as I am buying the games cheaper and increasing the value of my trade ins.

I had a Playstation 2 I won in a competition that I wanted to sell. CEX in Bromley never had any money to actual pay me and would only offer credit. Looking at their prices, PC games cost more second hand than new from GAME over the road.

Strewth we thought it was just us
We go past our local one and somedays there is a queue outside waiting for it to open

We went in to look but felt that the prices were very high, better deals on ebay, amazon, local paper etc..
Even the mobile phones seemed tatty & expensive

We thought we must be missing a trick somewhere ?
Is it for people who don't buy online ?
Or people that trade up by trading in their old stuff ?

Sorry to be dim but it's appeal has evaded us
