Why are all the children at school when you need to lay the blame?

Some-one (me :o) has just spilt black coffee on the carpet. I have padded it with paper towels and removed the main stain, any other help or tips.

Yes. I have a 3 stage solution that works.

Stage 1 - remove most of the spilt coffee by blotting with a clean, damp cloth. (obviously you've already done this).

Stage 2 - squeeze a little washing up liquid into a bowl of clean, lukewarm (not hot) water, and blot area with a clean cloth from this bowl.

Stage 3 - mix a solution of white vinegar and lukewarm water (1/4 vinegar is about right), blot area with clean cloth from this mix.

Repeat stages 2 and 3 if stain remains. Remember the carpet may appear darker if it is still damp or the pile has changed direction.

Good luck and shout at the kids anyway - try "And who did this?". If nothing else it'll make them more careful!

Hi all. I've got a small coffee stain on my housemate's lovely cream carpet. It's about the size of a 50p piece. It happened this morning but it's already dried. I've tried vanish stain remover foam on it which has made a slight difference but not very much (anyone thinking of buying that foam, don't bother it's not worth it!)

Any ideas? I'd really appreciate any help you can give!

have you tried sponging with a damp sponge and a bit of soap? I am always spilling my coffee on my oatmeal carpet and that works for me. (Black coffee, sugar, no milk). if the stain dries then a drop of stardrops always does the trick. works on the pop spills that have dried in too!

Any tips for removing marks, tried immediate first aid (washing up liquid) followed by steam and proper carpet cleaning liquid (vax) mostly gone but still some marks. (carpet is 70% wool)

I think you might just have to leave it for the time being. I speak from experience as I have cream carpets as well and like yours are wool so they don't tollerate chemicals and wot not too much.

I would be inclined to leave it for the moment let it dry right back and if you have any 1001 spray is the jobby. I personally think it is better than Vanish and the rest of them put together and it's allot cheaper as well. The stain will gradually fade it might take a couple or so months but it will go back. The toruble is if you start doing too much your fibres on the carpet will go all fluffy and it will look worse.

  • There are numerous posts here, very few ACTUALLY offering concrete advice to people suffering from coffee stains i.e. a stain is in actual fact a mark which persistently refuses to shift. Of course we would all have dealt with the stain immediately if we'd had the chance, so such postings are irrelevant! Nuff said!!! Oh those self righteous people with the benefit of hindsight and being on top of things at all times, ha de ha!

Let's first of all eliminate some expensive but ineffectual 'remedies'. I have tried on my cream pure wool rug, save us some money and time!! Firstly Bissell's very expensive Oxy Pro and Tough Stain Precleaner; no these didn't shift the dried in coffee stains. Neither did the Vanish stick (enzymes) I extrapolate from this that bio washing powder paste might not work either. Neither did washing up liquid - surfectant - anti grease (in our highly populated and important country of Britain this is the term we use for this item although numerous postings on this site refer to it as general purpose washing detergent etc. which is unnecessarily alien and confusing to us, why do people do this?). Sadly vinegar did not work despite its environmental credentials.

However I have had good results on the dried in coffee stain with Vanish Oxy Action Fabric Stain remover in a tub. This is the type of cleaner designed to use as a paste for stains on clothes or in wash. It's a little more grainy in texture when mixed than I would like but hey it works! Please buy when supermarkets etc. have a half price offer as again can be very expensive or there are own brands with similar ingredients. I believe this product is based on oxygen bleach i.e hydrogen peroxide. I wish I were a chemist, so many of these products are from incredibly simple, very cheap chemical ingredients but the manufacturers charge a fortune for them. Basics seem to be surfectants, enzymes or oxygen bleach. In fact you can buy hydrogen peroxide from chemists so this might be my next move when my Vanish Oxy Action runs out.

Please don't give up on your stains and destroy the environment by throwing the carpet away and claiming on insurance as some suggest on this site. There is a way, let's just put our heads together and try a much more technical approach. Come on let's get our thinking caps on! Good luck.
