    Hello,

I have a problem with my laptop and im not sure what to do with it. I bought it from PC World and i want to know if anyone knows what the returns procedure is.

It is a packard bell and when it has been on for let say 2 hours it will suddenly turn off. The base is extremely hot and the fan is very very noisy. I do study computing but im still unsure whats wrong with it. Could it be the fan? or the processor? Anyhoo, i want to take it back and get a full refund, i dont want to be associated with PC World, i just dont like their service or their inferior products. The main problem is that i want a replacement or refund as i cannot be longer than 2 days without my laptop as i have a load of deadlines due soon and need to get them done.

I went in today to explain my situation and the assistant said that it has to be sent away for at least a week to be 'diagnosed' and fixed. I dont want it fixed i want a new laptop for the problems, why would i want the rubbish one back? So anyway, what are my rights? am i entitled to a replacement or refund?

Has anyone got a clue on what to do? or what rights i have?

P.S. It takes the mick when they ask you to phone an 0845 number to get the laptop you bought of them fixed.

    thanks for your time

    Tom

It has got to go away!!

I had a problem with my laptop the other year and I had to send it away, it came back and I had to send it away, it came back and I had to send it back and on it went. It was away for 6 weeks one time. I had taken out the extra warranty and in the t&c it said if you send it away more than x amount of times or it is away for more than x amount of time they will replace or give you vouchers to the value of the product at that current time, I did have a fight on my hands to get it, I got vouchers in the end and I got a replacement. Yet again I had a problem with my laptop I had to send it away, it came back and I had to send it away, it came back and I had to send it back and on it went again. I argued the fact with them yet again and even got in contact with a high high up managed who sorted it out the problem at the time and said if any more problems let him know, guess what it went wrong again so I contacted him and I got it exchanged for vouchers. I am on my 3rd laptop I purchased 2 free but added a little money to them as the value had decreased. Every time I purchased the extra warranty and it is well worth it for what I have had out of it.

If you think the problem was there from the start don’t you think the symptoms would have been there from the start? It is proving that it was not fit for the purpose at the time of purchase, laptops are very temperamental. You can't just go into the shop and ask for an exchange like you would with a kettle. They could claim it is down to misuse, accident, etc and they would have to send it away. They need to investigate the item as with a pc or laptop they may of been open to viruses which would make it not there fault, it may not of been ventilated properly which causes it to over heat, it could of been damaged by you in some way maybe not intentional but they still need to investigate it. A replacement laptop while it is away is not compulsory for them as it is a courtesy which they may choose not to do on a pc or laptop. I hope you get this sorted but don’t expect to get a replacement while it is away as I can tell you won’t get one, if you do I will be shocked. It could be away for quite a few weeks or only a few days (see my previous post) as I have had a wide range of time that my past laptops have been away for. What ever you do hound them and hound them as that’s how we got things sorted.

The box is here for me to send it away. Im going to back it up all onto a dvd and just have to deal with not been able to do my work. I have contacted uni and they say im not allowed to use the dvd on the network. I was also told if it is gone for more than four weeks i can go into the branch and more or less pick any laptop i want. If it is lost/stolen etc the same happens. If after 3 weeks i have no luck im going into the store and complaining. Thank you for all your help guys. Lets see how its pans out.

the power supply unti could need replacing. sounds just like a fault we had on our old pc.

imho anyone who shops at pc world needs their heads testing. bargains schmargins. they are useless, rip you off and have not got a danny about after sales care.

i took the first ever pc we boguht (from the cowboys at pc world) back on numerous occasions because it wouldnt let us connect to the internet. backwards and forwards with the same "repaired" fault and they eventually did the test infront of us after we had a huge row and threatened trading standards.

seems cowboys like this only do a half arsed job but as soon as you mention trading standards the problem is fixed. happened to me years ago with a tv i got for my 18th birthday from some shop called "colorvision" (i think if i remember rightly). the icture was crap and it spent its first 6 months in repair. when TS got involved the problem was rectified straight away. duff wiring in the pre-wired plug!

i believe that as soon as the warranty runs out on items bought a store like pc world, dixons, currys, and the like the item goes tits up the day after it runs out. its happened to me so many times.

only one has ever done a replacement whilst items has been in repair (we took extended warranty thankfully, well my parents did, it was my first ever stereo with cd player) and that was with a co who i think are no longer trading and i forget their name, something like techno-something. green and grey/black signs outside the shop.

we got our tv out of a catalogue and the day BEFORE the warranty expired (couldnt afford the extended) it went kaput during the first match of the world cup! imagine the uproar i heard from the living room at silly oclock (as the last wc was in japan) it got repaired and half hour after it being returned it went kaput again but they repaired it again (even though it was then out of its warranty) and touch wood its been working ever since.

/waits with baited breath for the first game of this world cup!

They dont have to give you a replacement, some manufacturers will insist that it must be diagnosed and attempted to be repaired by them. If they cannot fix the problem then you will be offered a new one or a repair depending on their policy.
  • 3 weeks, I'd give them 14 days to return it in working condition or give you a full refund/replacement.

  • Hiya,

Your talking about your coverplan T&C which says that they will give you vouchers to the value of a replacement if your product is away for 6 weeks or more... (That's correct)
BUT - It does not have to be all in one go - If you have had more than one repair which did not fix it then report it straight away and if you can show that they never fixed the fault and it has been out of action for 6 weeks or more then you ARE entitled to a replacement...

(Ex DSG Staff) Hope that helps a bit
