Hello discobaby

I'll move your thread to the 'Techie Stuff' board.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

Regards

Don't use Chrome, use Firefox or Opera.
Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.

So slow? Firefox is generally pretty quick. What add-ons do you have installed (Tools -> Add-ons)? Could you remove them if they're unwanted?

Is your version up-to-date (Help -> Check for Updates)?

Can you download and run CCleaner, reboot and try again?

Uninstall any programs you don't need from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.

Then run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (link), update it and run a Quick Scan. Remove anything it finds, and paste the report here.

If MBAM does find anything, run a Full Scan after posting the report here. If that finds anything, remove all that finds and post that report here as well.

Next download and run CCleaner (link), but do not install the Yahoo! toolbar. Hit the Run Cleaner (bottom right button) - this might take a minute or two.

On the left hand side, click the Registry button. Then Scan for Issues and Fix selected Issues - when prompted to make a backup, just press Yes then click Save. In the next window, click Fix All Selected Issues.

Hopefully the above will get rid of any existing spyware, and free up some disk space for you. We should now concentrate on defragmenting your drive.

Download and Defraggler (link) - but don't run it, just yet! Close any programs down, with the exception of your firewall or antivirus (if you have either of these). Open Defraggler, and near the bottom left, click the Defrag button. Set aside a good hour or two for this, perhaps even overnight.

With any luck, after doing the above, your machine should be a lot snappier again. There are more ways of freeing up space, but I'd rather see how this goes first!

By the way, you should ideally do the above once a week or fortnight, just to keep on top of things.
Everybody is equal; However some are more equal than others.

Of course another, simpler explanation is perhaps that your internet connection is slow, and that there's nothing wrong with the "speed" of either browser.

For example, if you scroll down a page that has already loaded, does it scroll too slowly?

yep

chrome beats firefox in something like 80% of benchmarks i read?

firefox is pretty close but with all the apps and mods it can slow to ie speeds in some tests

chrome is great, simple, fast, and fast to use because of the omnibar
Back by no demand whatsoever.

What security do you use on your machine? It may be too intrusive and slowing things right down.

Google Chrome and Apple Safari seem to be the fastest at the minute. The next version of Opera should also be pretty speedy.

I agree that Firefox isn't the fastest of web browsers.
