what numpty thought c was a good place to start in the alphabet?

There are far far too many braindead applications out there that have C:\ hardcoded into them in various places and will fail if you don't have a C:\ drive available.0 -

Linux and Mac OS X don't use drive letter assignments, yet Windows applications have no problem accessing my hard drive when I run them in CrossOver Office. It just cheats and makes a pretend C drive in the background.0 -
You can do a similar bodge on Windows using the SUBST command, or just by assigning more than one letter to a single drive.
There's not much point switching to a unix-like filesystem on Windows though, far too much stuff would break and the whole thing with mounting removable devices into a folder under your main filesystem would confuse the hell out of an awful lot of users.0 -

Well, it depends how it's done. On OS X, when I insert a CD or external drive, it mounts on the desktop. It's a lot easier than messing around in My Computer IMHO.0
