what numpty thought c was a good place to start in the alphabet?:confused::D

"hmmm now bill, what shall we name these new hard disk thingymabobs on our new dos os's"
"well steve, how about A?"
"hmmm no, too predictable bill"
"B?"
"no bill! its too close to A"
" ok mr jobs, ummm c?"
"hmmmmm c..... I LOVE IT!"

ok.. ok i know that has nothing to do with the question but seemed funny in my head
anyone know why?

    Yes it would.

    There are far far too many braindead applications out there that have C:\ hardcoded into them in various places and will fail if you don't have a C:\ drive available.

    Linux and Mac OS X don't use drive letter assignments, yet Windows applications have no problem accessing my hard drive when I run them in CrossOver Office. It just cheats and makes a pretend C drive in the background.

    You can do a similar bodge on Windows using the SUBST command, or just by assigning more than one letter to a single drive.

    There's not much point switching to a unix-like filesystem on Windows though, far too much stuff would break and the whole thing with mounting removable devices into a folder under your main filesystem would confuse the hell out of an awful lot of users.

    Well, it depends how it's done. On OS X, when I insert a CD or external drive, it mounts on the desktop. It's a lot easier than messing around in My Computer IMHO.
