Orange contract problems

I went into my local Orange shop two weeks ago tomorrow. I asked them about suspending my phone service for six months whilst I go travelling, and they said that would be fine and to phone 150.

Whilst I was there I mentioned that I was due an upgrade and whether I could still suspend my account in July for six months if I did. I was told it was no problem and promptly upgraded.

I phoned tonight to arrange the suspension and was told that I couldn't do it until three months after I had been upgraded and that I would need to go into the shop to sort this out.

I am planning to go in tomorrow but does anyone know where I stand on this? Am I able to return the new phone and un-upgrade?

I've basically been mis-sold the upgrade and am hoping that will be enough for me to get this fixed?

Really annoyed.
