    Hi leandygandy,

If you melt the fat in a pan you can save it for using to make roast potatoes, shortcrust pastry or just general frying.

I grill my bacon (rind on) and then pour the juices into a pot. Once cooled the fat rises to the top and solidifies while the juices stay on the bottom. I remove the fat and add it to my 'fat mug' that I keep in the fridge and use the juices in the next thing I'm cooking that they would work with, eg spaghetti bolognese or cottage pie. So nothing is wasted.

If you want to cut the fat off before cooking, just cook it gently over a low heat (sometimes called rendering the fat) and get an old mug/jug/bowl to drain the fat into and and keep it in the fridge for using as mentioned as above.

    This thread has more ideas:

    Bacon Fat

I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the suggestions together.

I have to confess to do the same thing as pink winged i store the fat thats drained off in a mug in the fridge, it saves buying lard and when smeared on baking sheets with lots of veggies to roast it always makes them taste better and they dont stick.

Other than that crackling/rind etc i tend to give to the dog as a treat.... i dont even think it touches the sides on the way down.

Where do you get bacon with rind on? I haven't seen any for years! It's a bit like giblets in chickens - as rare as their teeth.

i chop it up and cook it then let the cats have it. no point me putting it out for the birds as my cats would eat it anyway. so i might as well start off by giving it to them, lol.

It also makes good bait if you are fond of fishing. Dad found out that trout love it!

Weird true confession time - I love eating bacon fat and rind - uncooked! Only the fat though, not the meat part so much.

Before you all shriek, it's a cured meat, so not really that different to eating ham, especially a lot of the continental cures like parma ham.

My hub likes that too  I prefer my mushrooms fried in bacon fat, but don't do it often for the obvious health disadvantages.
