I just had a delicious bacon sandwich but I don't like the fat on it so I trim that off and it usually goes in the bin

However.... Now I am thinking that the fat probably carries a lot of flavour and could be used when I do my fav LO meal of fried up new potatoes with one of the following; a chopped LO sausage, wee bit of chorizo or chopped bacon... If I throw in the bacon fat instead of adding oil or butter for frying, the flavour will go into the potatoes and then i can take out the rind at the end.

Does anyone else save bacon fat? And what do you use it for?

(Oh, and I only buttered one slice of the bread, and dropped the other slice in the fat that came out of the bacon as I fried it :o CBA with cleaning the grill these days and CBA with diets either :D)
Putting these winter preps here so I don't forget!

If I'm on a low carb diet, then I make sure it's left on the bacon and grill it until it's crispy so I don't often have that problem. :D

However if I do have any, I put it in a pan with some bread crumbs and seeds and mix it all together. The fat melts and binds the seeds etc. Stick it in an old yoghurt pot to set and you'll have some very happy birdies in your garden.

    Hi frugal,

I always save the fat from grilling bacon. I just pour it off into a pot, let it cool and the fat rises to the top and juices stay on the bottom. I remove the fat and add it to my 'fat mug' in the fridge and use the juices in the next thing I'm cooking that they would work with, eg bolognese or cottage pie. So no waste at all. The remaining fat gets used mainly for roasties, but also for general frying and when I'm making shortcrust pastry.

    This thread has more ideas:

I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the suggestions together.

We get delicious smoked bacon from our local butcher. I'm afraid I crispen the fat up on the grill and eat the lot. It has too much flavour to waste. You can always save it up in your fridge, render it down in a frying pan and use it for other cooking such as frying onions, etc. but as you'd still be eating the fat but in another process you might just as well eat it on your bacon, nice & crispy.

At Uni this morning we were talking about the sewage systems of London and apparently a thousand tonnes of fat are shoveled from them every year the old-fashioned way with men in overalls and shovels .
Its where people unbelieveably tip fat ect either down the sink or down the loo.We had to sit through some pretty graphic scenes about it as well.I must admit that I usually cut mine off and give the birds a treat with it.
I seem to have accumulated more than enough of the stuff around my tummy over the years so eating more wouldn't be a good idea :):):)

Hubby will not eat the rind from bacon, so it gets cut off before cooking and is presently thrown in the bin.

Can I freeze it and use it for something else? My thinking is perhaps chucking in stews/soups to add flavour and then fishing out before serving up? Any ideas whether this would work, or any other alternative suggestions much appreciated!

There was an episode of river cottage where HFW put it on a baking tray in a hot oven and it went all crunchy and yummy - they then sprinkled it on soup etc (but I suspect you could just eat it up like nicer HM pork scratchings..!)
