Help car ins muck up

i bought a car on friday and phoned to get it insured when i got home, the woman on the phone(indian call centre:mad:) quoted me that the cost would be £28 a month. i repeated the amount and she said yes that was correct. i took the policy out and gave my direct debit details etc.

On Wednesday i recieved the documents however they said £38? i phoned to ask why this was and was told it was the price quoted. I wasnt very happy and was told someone would listen to the call and get back to me. I waited but no reply, have phoned 3 times today and eventually got someone to answer me. They say that the woman states £38 which i know she didnt or i wouldnt have taken the poilcy out. i have asked for a copy of the tape which they are refusing and i am unsure of what to do as if i cancel i will be subject to a charge:mad: does anyone know what i should do from here? i also have another policy with them and am tempted to tell them where to stick it!:rotfl:the company is more than if that helps.
thanks

You can cancel under the 14 day cooling off period, which gives you 14 days from the date you receive your policy documents to cancel if the policy is not suitable.

Some companies make a charge of around £25 if you cancel in this period most make no charge.

It sounds like your with Norwich Union or More Than, the NU policy does not mention a charge so it looks like there is no penalty with them. I have not checked the More Than policy
  • I am no expert but I had a simular problem some years ago. The insurance company eventually honored the quote. If I were you, and they won't, I would do some more searching to see if I can get it cheaper(taking into consideration any cancellation charge) and if not stay with the company or if you can get it cheaper change.
    All the best

Dacouch, the OP does say that the policy is with morethan.

Presumably they did not give you an annual quote first, then broke it down for you into monthly payments. and tell you what the charges were for using the credit facilities.

I would reject it in the 14 days cooling off period after shopping around of course.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Sorry I did not read the last line stating it was More Than.

I would suggest you either find out what charge they have (If any) under the 14 day cooling off period.

The other alternative is to request a copy of all of the data hold on you (They can withold certain items) under the Data Protection Act which will cost a nominal amount. They should then send you a transcript of the call (When you put a request like this in and the Insurer realises they have made a mistake they will often apologise and correct the mistake before sending you the details)

If it helps we currently have 2 car policies with MoreThan and in the 'Key Facts~Policy Summary' leaflet it says the following about cancelling within the 14 days cooling off period....

**If having examined your policy documentation you decide not to proceed with the insurance you will have 14 days to cancel it starting on the day you receive the policy documentation. To cancel please write to the address or call the number shown on your policy schedule. You must also return your Certificate of Motor Insurance and on receipt we will refund any premiums already paid except when you have already made a claim under your policy. If you cancel your policy we may charge an administration fee of up to £55.**
