My parents have just been given a timeshare by their friends on our street... they think they have got a great deal "free timeshare, free holidays, wahoo" but in reality I am a bit concerned....

The £325 a year maintenance fees (for 1 week a year in May) are probably similar to what it would cost to rent a similar place for a week anyway.

The problem I see is that they have to pay that £325 a year EVERY YEAR whatever happens, whether they use it or not.

    Hhmmmmm

£325 just for one week in May:eek:

When you add on the cost of flights, they probably could have got a really good 2 week package deal for that!

I'd be concerned too, timeshares aren't a cheap option imo!

OK, we have timeshare and we love it. It is however, not for everyone.

It depends what they get for the money as to whether it is worth it tbh.

We have a 'red week, 6 persona apartment' with a holiday club so can go any time of year, for an extra £150 (RCI joining and exchange fee) can go to Butlins Blue Skies in Minehead for example, so for total £550 (maint & rci fees) we can stay at Butlins Blue Skies in August. We still get to use everything on site but get to stay in luxury apparments. Butlins 'Gold' units on site (which does not even touch Blue Skies) at the same time is £1400. Compare accomodation - Butlins: http://www.butlins.com/resorts/minehead/accomodation/ Blue Skies: http://www.butlins.com/blueskies/ (click on the 360 tour) Sorry but you will not get that for £550 in peak season including all the Entertainment that Butlins has on offer (and they Open Splash excusively fo Blue Skies residents!!)

Your parents can 'bank' their week with an exchange company such as RCI (www.rci.com) for £50 a year and then go elsewhere in the world so they are not tied to the same place, same week year after year, they can 'bank' the weeks for up to 3 years and save them for using on one big holiday. Look at the locations available on rci to see what they can exchange for, some places are just amazing. We are off to DVC in Animal Kingom, Florida next year (hopefully, holidays allowed permitting!!) to stay in a villa within Disney's Animal Kingdom. Cost for maint fees and exchange fees for the villa will be just over £1000 for the 2 weeks and $95 for the Magical Express where they take your luggage to your room from the airport. To stay in a ROOM in the AK Hotel is almost £200 A NIGHT. We will have a villa with full kitchen with washer, dryer, dishwasher, etc...

Sometimes - not all the time - sometimes, you can get really good deals from having TS. It depends what you want from a holiday.

We are in a 'club' and there are 20 places to choose from to go, 3 are in the UK so there is not even the added worry of affording the flights. Yes, you can get cheaper holidays but go and have a look at the accomodation available on RCI and this is why we like it. There are a lot of Country Clubs and it is really peaceful and Chav free, they are quite exclusive and we like them as we like quiet accomodation. It works for us, but it is not for everyone, but we think we have got a very good deal with ours and there do not seem to be many like this around now as we only pay £400 a year (we have had ours over 10 years now - long before the internet was around to find out what was in store to put us off, we are glad that we did it).

Have you tried the Diamond Resort Members Forum; I believe it is independent of the company itself.
    Not even wrong
