Dishwasher verses Washing-up

Most new DW's use as little water as possible and the water consumption can often be viewed on the info about the DW.
My DW goes on once a day-when full only. I would be lost without it and I also know that all germs are killed by the temperature of the water and as Im prone to bugs etc (have no immune system) it makes a good all-rounder for me.

In our house washing up by hand is wasteful of both water and heat because when you run the hot tap it takes ages before it starts running hot (must be a long way from hot water tank to kitchen sink!)
Our DW doesn't have a timer but my OH is up early and puts it on to catch Economy 7.
Also you can buy plug-in timers.
I buy Fairy tablets at Costco, using half a tablet, costs less than 4p per wash
I'd say, go to Ikea, stock up on inexpensive crockery and cutlery so you have plenty, just put the DW on every two or three days when full (using rinse prog occasionaly if neccessary) and it won't be expensive to run.0 -

My mother always used to save the water from running the hot tap and put it on the garden. Obviously you still pay for it if you've got a meter but it's better to use it than just throw it away.0 -
I miss my dishwasher!!! I had one in my old rented house and it was great but we have nowhere to plumb one in in our new house, I think they do save time and money as when im washing up i always have to refill the washing up bowl with clean water for the pans etc0

I love my dishwasher to bits , its so wonderful being able to just relax after a meal and not sit and hope someone else will offer to wash up... I only put it on every other day during the week and once a day at weekends , I usually load and dh unloads... but I always wash my nonstick pots by hand just a quick rinse and wash in the sink.... I found the dishwasher always ruins the outside of the pots.... also I tried using tescos own dishwasher tabs and everything got discoloured so as soon as I went back to my normal more expensive ones everything was fine.........
I would not be without it for anything I spent enough years when my kids were small washing up and now I am nearing retirement I have much better things to do with my time.... :T :T :T#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

Hi there,
My dishwasher which was inherited from MIL uses approx 7 washing up bowls worth of water for a standard wash. I only use it when really necessary. It seems soooo ineffecient, but it is nice to have it for the occassional times when I have lots of people round! HTHTess x

We have a dishwasher for two people - we cook properly every day and can still get away with running it every other day. Things are much cleaner and it's great not to have dirty plates hanging around the kitchen - they're in the DW where I can't see them. I give really dirty things a cursory rinse and put EVERYTHING in there - non-stick pans, crystal glasses, everything. My theory is, if the DW ruins it, I don't want it anyway, because I want to be able to put everything in there! So far pretty much everything has been fine.
The only trouble is the bowl from my SC is too deep to get cleaned properly, so it's the only thing I ever wash by hand! If it broke, we would have to buy a new one straight away. It has saved so many arguments and so much time.0 -
I went into panic mode last week when the arm feel off - but good old OH came to the rescue and put it back on with my DD hair bobble :j :T :j
Gets loaded throughout the day (4 of us), put on at night and completely dry in the morning for either DS or DD to unload before they go to school (depends on whose rota it is). They get some pocket money and I get to put my feet up :rotfl:When you were born, you were crying and everyone around was smiling. Live your life so at the end, you're the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying! :rotfl:0 -
I wouldnt give my dishwasher up ever!
It is more hygenic, and uses less water (just go onto a water company website they confirm this) and as Math says keeps your kitchen clean and tidy. There are four of us so it is full up everyday and if im having a big cooking session then its often on twice.
I also put my dishclothes in there every night.0
