    Hi Mumoffour77,

If I have a lot to do I do them in stages, so I make up the basic shape first (use the swirling method as massively easier and less time consuming!), then when I've got them done I add the blankets and muslins around, then I do the ribbons after then finally wrap. Just feel I like to do one thing rather than get everything out and only do a couple of cakes if that makes sense. Easier to do ribbons for a dozen cakes, you get into more of a production line.

Ooh as a newbie novice at all this, can you please explain what the swirling method is please?

I just can't to the swirling method, tried and tried but with no luck:( Also how do you add items to the middle with the swirling method, is it just as easy to push things inside the cake?

I use the swirling method as well i find it keeps the nappies in better shape for longer so can make some up ready to use when i need them. I find rolling them they do go out of shape if left a while

I have seen a few comments from recipients of nappycakes regarding the rolling of nappies. It does make them very difficult to use so if you can master swirling it is better,
I roll one nappy to use as my core, I then lay about 8 nappies down staggered, laying each one down at the bottom of the waistband of the previous nappy. I then put the rolled nappy on the bottom of the nappy nearest to me and roll upwards gathering the nappies as you go. I then secure with large band. You can then either add another layer of the staggered nappies by rolling again or just tuck extras in under the band. I put the contents in by removing the rolled nappy from the core and a few extras if required.

Thanks tried to explain it best I can. Once you get a bit more practiced you can do it with more than 8 nappies but I find it easier to do it as 2 lots of 8 etc. I kind of hold the rolled tier against me whilst I stretch a band over it so one sid eof it is held together against me whilst my hand holds the other side together. To do a basic 3 tier without anything in the middle to start off with I can do this method in about 3-5 minutes! Then you can take out the middle of the cake and put your bits in.
  • Becs - you are very good in explaining it to us thanks

    Hello everyone,

Haven't been around for a while, sorry its been a bit manic! I am hoping to put the rest of my cakes on my website today!..

Does anyone do this as a full time income?? That is what I am aiming for by doing nappy cakes, towel cakes, baby bouquets etc.. Does anyone else do this??

Gorgeous cakes as usual and thanky you Becs for your description of the swirling method.. I will have to have a practise with that, thanks so much xx
