Question about ending Orange contract

Okay - here's my problem. My contract with Orange ends on 15th October, but I am leaving for USA on 3rd June and not arriving back into the UK until the 15th September. Have just called Orange and they've told me that if I want to keep my number (which I do, ideally), I'll have to call them when I get back...all well and dandy, but I was under the impression that if I over-ran my contract Orange would automatically put me on a new one as I hadn't told them otherwise....customer service guy kept insisting that this was the case and didn't seem to get my point that while he may well be right, if he was wrong I'd have no recourse to challenge it!
So do I cancel now and lose my number when the contract runs out in October, or do I just call them on 16th September and hope that the contract hasn't been automatically renewed?
Have to say I was not impressed with the guy I spoke to...quite rude and off-handish. Made me even more determined to leave Orange .
Thanks in advance for the help, guys!

Surely, if you get back on 15th September that gives you a whole month to sort out or cancel your current contract? Orange will only automatically renew your contract if you have done nothing by 15th October. Or is there something in the small print? I'm not with Orange.
Does this mean that you won't be using your phone while abroad?0 -
They definitely won't renew your contract on the 15th October. It only get's renewed when you upgrade your phone. You need to give them 30 days written notice to cancel your contract so send a letter to them when you return and send it by recorded post so they can't say they didn't receive it!
Personally I have been with Orange for years as I find they have the best customer service and you can always speak to a human being!"This Will Be Mine In 2009 Member" #215...

I wont be using my phone abroad as last time they claimed (wrongly!) that I spent 40 mins on the phone abroad in 3 days (this is normally 3/4 of my monthly calls...I don't call people a lot, mostly text) and then charged me over £70. I've also had endless problems with them not charging me the tariff promised, and overcharging me...I got some of the money back, but not all of it.
Problem is, if I call then 16th September, this is less than 30 days before my contract ends, so my contract would have to be extended to cover the extra day, and I'm not sure how they'd charge me for this, which is why I'm leaning toward getting a new number and just letting people know on my orange phone before the contract runs out0 -

No it doesn't.
Your contract ends 30 days after you give notice to end it. If you don't give notice it becomes a monthly rolling contract. They won't automatically renew it for 12 months unless you take up an offer to upgrade the phone.
What you are referring to is the "lock in" minimum term part of the contract. If you do nothing you contract will roll on happily and once you return you can give your 30 days notice and port the number elsewhere.
Yes you'd be be charged for the extra time over the contract but at a pro rate rate, and obviously your minutes used are prorated too, so if it's a £30, 300 minutes a month you'd be charged about £1 and could use 10 mins, the rest may be charged at whatever the contract rate is (if there were none rolled over to use)0 -
Funnily enough, they accept letters from abroad - and if you WRITE to customer services 45 days before your minimum term expires, things can be ready for you when you return!0

sorry to hijack the thread but i asked for my pac from orange 2 days ago. the girl said i will have it in a few days but as they require 30 days notice, even if i use the pac code straight away, i will be charged line rental till 26th of june (30 days after i asked for the pac) My 12 month contract will expire on 13 june.
so what they are saying is say i get the pac code monday 1st june. i give it to o2 the same day. my number moves from orange to o2 on 3rd june. but orange will still charge me line rental from 3rd to 26th june just for the hell of it?
doesnt seem fair or right to me. especially as pac codes only last for 30 days anyway,
when i left o2, i was only charged line rental for the days i was on o2, I used my pac code pretty much straight away.
Thanks for any clarification.0 -
