Thames Water
Step 1 - Request Water Meter
( You are allowed to cancel anytime within 12 month period & revert back to unmetered charges)
Step 2 - They will send out a surveyor who will determine if it is possible to have a Water Meter Installed. So if your on a shared water supply they can't install a Meter. ( When making initial request over the phone, if asked whether you have a shared supply tell them you don't know )
Step 3 - The survey guy will go back to head office and report that you are on shared supply.
Step 4 - They re-band your water services charges and you will pay a lesser amount each year for water based on the fact that you have a shared supply. They will ask you how many bedrooms your property has. The lesser bedrooms the cheaper your water services charges.

You can still have meters installed on shared supplies , they will just fit an internal meter.0

Yup on some shared supplies they can still install a meter (with the introduction of "smart" meters they can read these without having to enter your house) and are looking to push more shared supplies on to a meter.
However Alex is also very right and even if they did put a meter in you can always opt back out.
