I was given a beautiful dress as a present and I nearly swooned when I saw the price tag. It was the best part of £80 and by far the most expensive item of clothing I have ever owned. Imagine how gutted I was when at its first outing somebody pointed out that it was coming apart at the seams. I HATE taking stuff back to shops or complaining but I loved this dress and figured that an exchange wouldn't be too much to ask for. Luckily I had the receipt so they exchanged it but were rather tight lipped about it.
Imagine my double horror when the same thing happened to my replacement dress after two wears. I really really didn't want to go back to the shop but it was either that or have it mended at my own cost which would just be silly. I managed to find the bag that the dress came in but there was no receipt in it. Luckily whilst looking for something else I found a scrumpled up exchange note from the shop. I assumed this was as good as. When I appologeticly explained to the lady at the counter in the shop, she pulled the dress out and explained that they cant take it back without its tag on. I told her that I didn't expect the dress to fall to bits so I threw the tag away. She then looked at my exchange note and said that it didn't have faulty written on it then looked at me very suspiciously. She said she supposed she could exchange it and luckily they had one left in my size. Her assistant brought it over and began to give me the third degree as to what I must have done to make it come unstitched, and even suggested that maybe it was a bit tight on me. Correct me if I'm wrong but even if it was a bit tight on me, which it wasn't, it shouldn't come apart after two wears. Grrrrr. They gave me it and I appologised again like an idiot and asked if she could write faulty on my new exchange note incase it happened again. I didn't want to have the same trouble exchanging it. The lady passed me the sealed bag and said that the exchange note was inside. I checked when I got home and she hadn't put faulty on it.
I feel really soiled by the whole East experience. I don't think there is a single thing I can do about it either apart from tell everyone I know not to bother with expensive dresses. What I wonder though is how my rights would have stood without a receipt of anykind. Surely faulty items should be taken back with no questions. Anyway, rant overwith. Feel better now.

Depends. You can get some nice ones at one of the M&S depts for around £40, but if you go somewhere like Monsoon you'd be lucky to pay as little as £80. Never heard of East is East, but they sound shabby if you pay a medium price tag for that quality. I'm assuming they have their own label, so identifying it should be easy?0 -
£80 is an absolute bargain price to pay for a dress (Mrs maninthestreet will thank me for that, lol!).0

yes quite, I am a lucky girl and the dress that I got as a replacement actually fits better. It was the customer service that got me cross. I just wished they had said, "sorry about that, I hope it doesn't happen again" or something to that effect rather than handling the whole situation with affronted suspician.A replacement not once but twice

At the end of the day the item is faulty and if the replacement is faulty then you need to get it replaced or a refund, the choice is yours.0 -

I would have thought if an item is faulty one should have the choice of replacement or refunding with out question.
I must be so out of touch with the cost of things now a days, i sound like an old lady lol.
I'm a penny pinching single mum and to me 80 squid is a small fortune:o0
