My garage roof may contain asbestos
Comments

No he'll just mention that the garage roof is asbestos, and that it may need replacing at some point. Well at least thats all mine did. I bought this house last september and the garage has an asbestos roof on it. I was initially worried but apprently its the less dangerous type as its outside (?) so it shouldnt be much more expensive to get rid of when it needs doing, which luckily it doesnt at the moment as its fine (no leaks, cracks etc).

He is unlikely to do more than mention it exists.
If it is in bad condition it will probably just require painting.
In our survey our surveyor said our wooden soffits were rotting and needed replacing, when i took a close look at them i knew he was wrong, they were asbestos which doesnt rot. Paint peels of it though making him think it was wood.
So as mentioned previously abestos can be found in many places and its ok as long as it is bound in a matrix of paint or resin.
If you want to do it, removal and disposal is nothing more than a common sense job. Take the apprpriate precautions with respirators etc, bag and label it correctly and most local tips will take it.0 -
my surveyer said all of the above<"its asbestos"> really no big deal unless you sit there sanding it down while taking deep breathsYou're not drunk if you can lie on the floor without holding on0

My Garage roof is made from asbestos, when I bought my house 3 years ago the surveyors report pointed this out & said that should it need replacing a specialist should be brought in.
Some buyers do get frightened when the dreaded 'asbestos' is mentioned but their surveyor should be able to put their minds at rest (assuming it isn't falling down that is)Thanks to all who post comps :A :T0 -

Hi Jenny,
glad to see my original post inspired another!
I'm not worried about Asbestos (and I don't suppose most people are), however our surveyor pointed out that the roof we are looking at has a very limited lifespan (he reckons it will need replacing within 2-3 years if we plan to use it, and estimated £2k + to do the work), hence my concern.
My worry was more from a cost perspective than anything else because I know how much speciailists contractors like to charge! As has been pointed out, if it's left alone, it shouldn't cause an issue.
We paid for a detailed survey rather than relying on the Valation Report that most people stick with. If we'd just had the latter, the surveyor admitted he wouldn't have even mentioned asbestos.
Hope that helps.
