My garage roof may contain asbestos

after reading Tahiti's post about the dilema he faces with an asbestos roof, it's got me thinking.
I'm now wondering if the material on half of our garage roof is also asbestos?
We've accepted an offer and due a survey soon but is this going to cause a problem? The roof is in a good condition, not broken or leaking but when the surveyor comes round will he comment that "it's asbestos and has to be removed" or do they only advise removal if it's in a bad state of repair?
It was not highlighted when we bought the property 5 years ago.
Any comments would be appreciated as I'd like to be prepared. Many thanks.

If you are not going to dismantle it or drill into it it shouldn't be a problem.
When it needs replacing it will have to be done by specialists. I wouldn't worry about it if its in reasonable condition.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. I was concerned that should the word "asbestos" appear on the report then my buyer may run a mile......0 -
you would be supprised what else is asbestos. The artex that makes up ceiling coverings can contain it, so can toilet cysterns! They put it in the report just because they can.
My parents have an asbestos roof on their garage, its been fine for years and years.
As above dont drill or sand it. Cost of disposal can be lots if anything goes wrong with the roof!0 -
Bah, the cost of official disposal can be a lot.... just get a decent facemask and take it down the tip.
A bargain is only a bargain if you would have brought it anyway!0 -
Dig a hole in the back garden (or your neighbours at night).. :-]
As the asbestos is outside, and it may not be a dangerous type it may cost less to remove it. But dont quote me on that!0 -
lmao you nut, i wouldnt worry , what will be will be and as kne said you woudl be shocked how many things can contain asbestos, even floor tiles ceiling paint and types of old paint on wood work,i could go on and on!You're not drunk if you can lie on the floor without holding on0

I think the reasonably intelligent DIYer should be able to move Asbestos sheeting safely, however if it's in good condition it's best left alone. My weight loss following Doktor Dahlqvist' Dietary Program

thanks for all your comments. However "if" it turns out to be asbestos, what do you think the surveyor is likely to report? Something like "in good order, no need to replace"?0
