Look on any job site (e.g. reed, £50k+) and you see just what jobs are really paying. Health, dentistry, consultancies, finance, accountancy, some civil service (http://www.civilservice.gov.uk/recruitment/entry/experienced-professionals), contracts for oil & gas for £500 a day. Compared to many on here I'm more than thankful, but looking at what one could earn........ I need to make some sort of plan as general engineering will never pay the sort of money above.
The top end of most fields will pay north of £50K. Certainly thats even the case in call centres, IT, car sales, etc and they're not renowned for being among the highest paying.
However only a relative few earn that, and usually for good reason - they are exceptional at what they do, or the right combination of skills, the right place at the right time, etc, etc.
In terms of contract work, yes you can earn a large daily rate, however you're "bought in" for a specific task so job security is rare and you might have to be prepared to live out of a suitcase.
It depends what motivates you. Depends what you want out of life.0 -

Seems about right, given the size of departments they run.0 -
Admin assistant for a small firm of builders £7800 a year, 20hrs a week during school hours
No perks apart from get discounts if I need new kitchens/bathrooms etc
Husband £70k a year, offshore oil rig worker
Perks are loads of time off, 2 weeks away 2 at home, sometimes get 'bed busted' so gets full pay for staying at home ( 10 weeks off on full pay before in one go, when they weren't ready for his trade )
5 weeks holiday on top of the 2 weeks every month he gets anyway
Bad bits - being away with 2 young kids, misses special occasions like birthdays, christmas etc depending on his rotation, he almost missed his own wedding!
having to spend 2 weeks in the middle of the sea and not been able to get off and go anywhere!
Dangerous travel with helicopters
Have to change employers quite often to follow the work, short contracts
Getting 'fogged on' in bad weather and having to spend more time away that eats into your time off0 -
It's upsetting to see that so many people have to slave away at jobs they hate for very little pay.
Start listening to mixergy, smart passive income, Dane Maxwell, start reading The 4 hour Workweek, The Lean startup, etc, etc...
Immerse yourself the entrepreneurial communities & cultures.
There's a whole world waiting for those of you willing to break from the 9 to 5 routine, you just have to know where to look.
I read the four hour work week. Its suggestion to break the 9 to 5 routine is to get an IT job and then outsource all your work to a developing country, and keep the profit. What an outstanding contribution to the world.
Whilst I admire the smugness of the anti-9 to 5 brigade, their arrogance negates one thing: many people enjoy their 9 to 5 jobs. I'm more 0700 to 2000, five days a week, and I really enjoy it. So thanks for telling me how your lifestyle is better than mine, but your opinion is subjective.0 -
Or maybe you've been caught out and are back tracking?
Funny because Jamez735 is quite a unique name, yet every other occurence of it through google are from a games playing geek, who still lives at home and has written the odd half arsed blog... but i'm sure thats just coincidence.busted.

Theres no evidence at all that he lives the dream, as it were.
Hes put a few posts on the 'up your income' board intimating that hes going to look at online surveys to get extra cash - not what i'd be expecting from a successful entrepreneur
His username when you google it, pulls back a load of hits around gaming on a PS3, xbox, etc, and one or two on tropical fish.
Comes across as just because hes read a couple of motivational books that he has 'the answer'.
Reality is hes probably some unemployed geek living at home with his mum.0 -
Roxy - what sort of offshore work does he do? Very interested! Feel free to pm!0
