While working away dont spend a penny as all paid for.
Now that's what I'm talking about. Not the job for me (never was physical and knowing my luck I'd have an accident) - drilling engineers / petroleum engineers / subsea engineers seem to get paid the most (in oil & gas) from what I've seen.
Nice one!0 -
I'm 24 and now on £38k as a Bid Commercial Analyst for a Transport Company.
Pros: I find the work interesting, okayish pension (not as good as a TOC's pension), flexible with hours and treat you as an adult.
Cons: Can be long hours working 9-6pm, 5 days a week with little lunch break when there is lots to get on with."No likey no need to hit thanks button!":pHowever its always nice to be thanked if you feel mine and other people's posts here offer great advice:D So hit the button if you likey:rotfl:0 -
I'm almost done reading this whole thread!! Very interesting. Main note is how poorly paid workers are in the UK. You'd be better off working abroad. Private sector salaries are so poor - public sector salaries look on par, but a lot of those posters seem to get final salary pensions, too - so you'd be better doing those roles, or just claiming benefits! I'd kill for final salary pension! Many also seem to work in London - stuff that... my salary is worth a fortune up here compared to down there. I don't see why anybody would work there!
Highest paying jobs seem to be (no surprise) accountancy (staggering salaries quoted !) / finance / sales & marketing / offshore work (like the days off you get with that)! From what I remember anyway.
Middling-high salaries appear to be IT / engineering / police / train driver / purchase managers (?) etc.
I knew the branch of engineering I went into would pay ok - hopefully it will do so for some to come. I honestly don't know how most of you get by, especially if you have mortgage / family / both! I ruled out a family years ago but it seems I'd be better placed to 'afford one'
I wonder what cross-section of society posts on here - who are we missing etc.. I spoke of my friends who earn shedloads more than me - must be more out there.
Makes me realise I'm doing ok in a job I love, with time to spare for hobbies. Going to uni to do engineering was the best decision ever - I am so privileged and thankful to have been given the chance.
Couple more pages to read through but I get the gist of it now - an eye-opener!!0 -

If they're REALLY well paid - then a company will employ a headhunter to find someone that fits the job spec (and quite literally the job comes to you!)
This. But it's dangerous because if your speciality goes out the window.... that's why I've always got things running through my head, reading up on other types of engineering, business, etc!0 -
Believe it or not, but for my current job, the employer came to me through linkedin.
Now it was well worth signing up for the website!"No likey no need to hit thanks button!":pHowever its always nice to be thanked if you feel mine and other people's posts here offer great advice:D So hit the button if you likey:rotfl:0 -
£8.40 an hour agency work, can't get anything better and believe me I have tried. This job is an hour's commute so it's a fair chunk out of my take home just to get there and back. No pension, no benefits to speak of other than whatever is compulsory by law. Oh and I am 47 and now believe I am one of life's losers0

Don't say that about yourself SnowyOwl, you are not a loser!
A loser is someone who can't be ars*ed to get out of bed to go to work and uses the benefit system as a career option.
A loser is someone who goes out robbing people's houses,
A loser is someone who de-frauds people out of their hard earned life savings
A loser is someone who grows/deals drugs and smashes people up who try to get in their way.
Then there are those disgusting lowlifes within the banking industry who made the dicision to fix the Libor rate/PPI miss-selling etc etc etc anything they could to make a fast buck out of everyone.
Don't put yourself down, you are a decent, hardworking person who can hold their head high! What if every single day I did everything within my capability........What could I achieve in a day? a week? a year? 5 years?0 -
