Asking for payment after 5 years????

I have just had a Final Notice bill through from Southern Water asking for a payment from 2001!! They claim that I didnt pay my last four bills before moving out of my last house in that year. Its for £85.
Can they ask for money five years down the line/
I dont have statements that far back so I cannot prove it either way, but Ill be damned if Im going to pay my bank to check back that far.
Any suggestions??

I think they can ask for unpaid bills.

I suggest you get it sorted out and not ignore the matter. A judgement against you can have serious implications on your credit rating.

I think you might be able to get bank statements for free under the freedom of infomation act? You should ask the guys on the "bank charges are illegal" thread as they will know.

I agree that £85 doesn't sound much for 4 bills (not for down south anyway).

My suggestion is to stall them by asking for copies of the bills and then to try and get them to write them off as a gesture of goodwill.
