I'm glad I'm not alone, I'd rather get the bus than buy an i10

All these new i10's, i20's etc look OK and inoffensive when new. 3 years down the line it'll be apparent that they were bought and maintained by the most miserly skinflints in the Western Hemisphere and look older than they really are.

Actually the Korean cars seem to last reasonably well with minimal care (the 5 year warranty on say the Hyndai's and 7 year on some Kia's gives an indication of how they expect them to last), we've got a 6 year old Kia Rio that is still in good nick with absolutely minimal care other than yearly service, and wash/hoover every few weeks* (indeed it looks better maintained than many much bigger brand cars).

IIRC our local taxi firms seem to be moving towards Kia's as well, which possibly says something about the reliability/service they get compared to the costs.

The I10's and the like fill a niche in the market, that seems to have been long since abandoned by some of the more established companies, for the price of a fairly basic Corsa or 207 you can get a more comfortable Kia ranging from the Rio to the Ceed, or one of the Hyundai's.

They are basically inexpensive cars for people who just want a vehicle to get them from A to B, and do it reliably at as low a cost as possible.

Not everyone looking for a car wants it to be pretty, or are particularly fussed about it still being worth a lot 3-5 years down the line, and just want to keep the costs down - with something like the Hyundai you can be fairly certain it'll still be running with just a yearly service in 5 years (thanks to the warranty), by which time you'll have more than paid off it's up front cost, even on a low budget.

*We bought it for (from memory) 6k on the road, after talking to a couple of friends/neighbours who had had slightly older models, and looking around - the choice for the price was either a second hand car with no warranty, a very basic corsa (not anything like big enough for 3 adults + wheelchair), or the Rio.
  • IMO Hyundai's are great cars - I've owned loads of cars over the years - from shitroens to fords. I'd spend my money on a hyundai every time..... its the only car I bought that I wasted my money buying a two warranty for!!!

I hear ya, It seems that every other thread you read is somebody buying a scrappage i10,

You can't be the animal 3 cylinder engines,

Then again i cant talk I'm after a Laguna or a Bora haha!

!!!!!! don't get a laguna ! It will spend more time in a garage then on the road!! The Bora does exactly what it says on the tin - BORING but will last well! but then you will pay quite a lot more for a Bora than a laguna built in the same year.

and they looked crap then aswell, compare a datsun stanza with a ford escort in say 1980? no competition escort every time.

thier styling was miles out then, its got better as the years went on,and so has the korean stuff these days compared to 10 years ago.

all theyve done is copy what we already have, nothing new. come on hyundai and kia, innovation is what we need to make us buy your stuff.

But still more plentiful than Ford, Vauxhall and Chrysler spares once they have all gone under.

I had a Kia Ceed out on a 3 day test drive last year, I was extremely impressed with it.

As someone said, they are taking over where the Japanese left off, good luck to them I say.
  • It all depends what you want from a car - I had a second hand daewoo for the last decade, ... I am a terrible car owner I admit, I hardly ever got it serviced, or checked the oil, or did anything to look after it at all to be honest, but it was a reliable little car, and got me up and down the country with very little cost or bother.

I finally killed it, and have replaced it with... another used daewoo! Cheap as chips, comfortable and reliable ;-) (touch wood!)
