I'm constantly amazed at the tips on this site. I've had one of these spray bottles for a couple of months but couldn't get it to work. Now I know why! Just tried mixing sunflower oil with water and it works a treat.dinkydee wrote:My 1 cal olive oil spray contains the following ingredients: 58% olive oil, water, emulsifier, lecithin E473, alcohol, antioxidant: vitamin E
That's why I'd rather use just oil and water.0 -
I have a nasty feeling that the oil in these things (thick creamy-ish) is an emulsion and may be IIRC partially hydrogenated with water to make it work. Its just something I can sort of remember reading and I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. Its dripping for me!The quicker you fall behind, the longer you have to catch up...0

I like to use a spray oil for greasing cake tins etc. It's too expensive to buy though. I've tried putting my own oil in the empty bottle but it doesn't come out in a fine spray. So I tried making my own using the same proportions of oil and water. I'm struggling with an emulsifier though. I've tried lemon juice and vinegar, but neither is successful. Does anybody know what I could use?0

You could try a bit of alcohol ... something like vodka might work. A lot of these cooking sprays seems to have it in, and if you only add a bit the alcohol will burn off during cooking anyway.0

I'll give that a go, thanks. Just need to ask around and see if anyone can let me have some!0 -
I use a little bit of vodka to emulsify essential oil in water for a room spray, I only use about a teaspoon in a biggish spray bottle, so it should work with cooking oil & water. I didn't have any vodka in the house so was going to buy a cheapy small bottle until I spotted a miniature in my son's room when he moved out!Dum Spiro Spero0

Let us know if it works! I have been wanting to do the oil-spraying thing too, and they don't sell it ready made in my supermarket here."Remember that many of the things you have now you could once only dream of" - Epicurus0 -
It will work with water but you don't need a great deal.
About 1/7th by volume is what's used to make mayonnaise or whipped cream consistency - so you'd need even less than that or you'll just clog up your spray.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there.
