Tube Failure Symptoms?

My Mum's area went digital last week. A couple of months ago I bought her a Humax Freeview box, all installed OK and giving very good results. I went down there last weekend to find the TV (an old CRT Sanyo, about 10 years old I think) now appears to be giving up the ghost. Grr... When switched on from cold, there is instant audio, but no picture. The picture comes up eventually, but takes about 6 minutes to stabilise, before then it's breaking up, rolling etc. Once warmed up, it's fine.
Is this is symptom of imminent tube failure, if so how long is it likely to last?
The weird thing is that if you switch to the Humax set-up menu when it's still cold, then a stable image does come up-which indicates to me that it's not the tube after all. Can anyone offer any suggestions please?
Assuming the fault is not fixable, I'm considering either trying to find an old 22" CRT replacement, or ditch the Humax box and buy her a cheap digital LCD.
Just wish the TV had failed 3 months ago!

People usually give them away on Freecycle (crt's), you could try it?I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.

Hi, def not the tube- sounds like a faulty tuner-how are you feeding the humax box into the tv. If you use scart it bypasses the tuner and should give a better pic.Depending on the type of tv some people actually connect a scart but then select a channel number e.g. 6 to watch the box therefore not actually using the scart. If you use scart and it does not switch automatically then you need to select AV or EXT to watch through the scart. If you are using a scart and watching through AV or EXT then you probably have a fault that is probably not worth fixing. This all assumes that you have checked all connections and checked the scart lead by substitution.0

It's connected by SCART and switched automatically.
The problem did not come up until the Freeview box had been connected for about 6 weeks. There isn't another TV there to test the Humax with, but I'd say I'm 90% sure that the fault is not in the box.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Hi, if you are definately watching through the scart then try tuning the rf output from the box into a spare channel on the tv and see if still shows same symptons. If it does you could have dry joints/faulty capacitors near the frame chip or problems with capacitors in the power supply, either way it would probably cost well over £50 to sort. Best bet is to try both the box and tv by substitution.0

Sounds like your Mum may be in the same area as me (Exeter).
I also had to buy a PVR recoder after switchover and have been very pleased with the Humax.
The only gripe I had with it after switchover was that BBC1 and BBC2 did not appear in the correct order, so I rescanned my channels and set up BBC1 and BBC2 as favourites in the menu that popped up after the re-scan.I assume you've rescanned your Mum's box?
Also surely your Humax is still under guarantee?
Very helpful website I found here www. ricability-digitaltv.org.uk - it has some helpful set-up diagrams :hello:0
