question regading damaged carpet

hello all,
i live in a student house in cardiff managed by 2let2.
last night my friend who was over dropped a cigarette into a bin, the plastic bag inside the bin caught fire and has now left black melt marks on the carpet. not too damaged at all but damaged none the less.
now 1 of my housemates has seen fit to ring 2let2 and tell them about this.
ive accepted it was my fault as it was my friend who did it.
but 2let2 are reknowned for being a bad letting agents here in cardiff.
on the phone they said theyll come round tomorrow, look at the damage and talk about it then, but that im liable for all costs.
now as i said previously 2let2 are reknowned for being very hard to deal with.
i can see them trying to get me to pay for a whole new carpet, when it clearly doesnt need 1.
i have no money, apart from the £300 bond they have when we moved in.
where do i stand here?
also im sure ive read somewhere that theres a list online that shows things landlords/agents do to the house which are classed as illegal. i think it might be something to do with certain door locks being on bedrooms or something.
i am not going to be a !!!!!! to them tomorrow, but if they start being dicks to me (current housemate has had problems with them) i want to know where i stand and put them in their place....
any help is appreciated, will keep a close eye on this topic,
any replies and help appreciated, i really dont want to get screwed over here i cant afford it.
thanks in advance.

Dont you have any insurance ie contents insurance ?? I think they may want the carpet replaced TBH0

Unless it's one of those carpets that is made up of squares, then I don't see how you could get away without a whole new carpet!!
What was the state of the carpet before the cigarette burn?
You should return the house in the state that you received it in, with permitted wear and tear. A burn in the carpet is NOT wear and tear.
Why isn't your friend paying for this?!?Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
Why on earth did you take the blame.
Its not being screwed over by them insisting on a new carpet, somebody damaged it so someone has to pay for it to be replaced. right
Contents insurance would be your best route and get your 'friend' to pay the excess.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
ye the fag got dropped in the bin, the plastic bag lining the bin caught on fire and has metled into the carpet, only a few little bits but still....
friend wont pay for it he has no money himself
and no its a student house we dont have contents insurance0 -
I must agree with pinkshoes, why on earth isn't your "friend" who created the damage paying for it? Seems like a clear cut case of negligence.0

You dont have contents insurance??
Crazy fools, being students you are more likely to need contents insurance..
Though to be fair, the landlord 'should' be able to claim on his insurance - your contents insurance wont cover the landlords property unless you have tenant liability on the policy and very few have this unless you ask for it as an extra..
If the LL can claim you / your friend should pay for the excess..
Is your deposit lodged in one of the schemes??0 -

my £300 deposit/bond is with the company managing the property we live with, 2let2.
anyway thanks for that will mention that if he has insurance it should cover it, especially as our frontdoor got kicked in about 6months ago, and needed a new door/lock etc and im assuming his insurance paid for that not the letting agents.0
