Santander to scrap UK bank brands [merged]

According to the BBC news, Santander is to rebrand Abbey, Alliance & Leicester and Bradford & Bingley to Santander by 2010. Any customer will be able to use any branch. No info about Cahoot as yet.
What will this mean for the £50,000 protection limit, I wonder? If the banks are all called Santander, then surely only one limit will apply. As I understand it, Abbey and A&L have separate licences at the moment.

An excellent move. It gives them a fresh start after all the adverse publicity for the likes of Abbey.
I might even give them another try ..... no, maybe not!0 -
Unfortunately as long as the monkeys at A&L still work there, they won't have my business!0

As yet, I have had no problems with A&L.'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0

More importantly, what will happen to the jobs of the employees of these organisations? I can't imagine Santander re-branding without radical rationalisation of their branch organisation. What will this mean for the £50,000 protection limit, I wonder?"The trouble with quotations on the Internet is that you never know whether they are genuine" - Charles Dickens0 -
Yeh just looks like they'll allow the A&L banking authorisation to quietly die over the next few years0
-
I can only see A&L getting worse, as their systems are migrated over to the Spanish error message spewing mess that Abbey are currently struggling with!0

It's terribly nice of you to think of them.Hungerdunger wrote: »More importantly, what will happen to the jobs of the employees of these organisations? I can't imagine Santander re-branding without radical rationalisation of their branch organisation.
But the fundamental purpose of this site is to find & encourage the best savings & mortgage rates.
And how are Santander supposed to give us that without cost savings? After all, the silly Spanish moos actually paid for B&B savings & branches & overpaid for A&L before the current crisis really broke, whereas Nationwide got the government to pay them for Dunfermline savings & branches.0 -
