spoke with 1 who are going to re-fer it back based on the fact I have had a baby and the other firm I need to phone tmrw...
anyone know of any insurance firms who are friendly to new mums??

Now... although you have had a baby, from what you have just said, you are stated as clinically obese and in medical terms in danger of risk to your own health. Insurance companies will look at this and frown on it. However, this usually only affects critical illness cover or permanent health insurance.

Now, some companies will still give you this life assurance but may 'load' the premium of the policy. Simple to put it increase the premium price.

Are you sure that you applied for life cover only? Did you apply for critical illness cover as well?

I would seek an IFA or try a different insurance company.

By the way, who did you use?

nope only wanted decreasing life cover to cover our mortgage should one of us pegs it.

we are currently with legal and general which was brokered through estate agents.... hence costing bucket loads

I tried legal and general as a new customer and friends provident (tried these 2 as they gave cashback on greasypalm)

I may be clinically obese, but I am fit and healthy, very active and haven't had any major sicknesses. I have been overweight my whole life and I will never be a 'thin' person.

If it was from an L&G rep then you would expect it to be more expensive than an IFA but even then it wouldnt be massively more expensive. 20% more probably.

Problem is that statistically, during the term of your cover, you will become a higher risk and that is what the insurers see. What is your height and weight? (no-one can identify you here so dont worry about that)

So your trying to organise your familys protection for many many years to come and have used a company that focuses on catching your eye by giving you £50 back rather than ensuring the cover is best for you? Your focusing on getting money in your backpocket more so than making sure you get the right insurance??

Speak to an IFA or online insurance insurance broker - make sure you take advice (this is such an important thing and it gets you better protection under the ombudsman). A proper broker will ask you questions about your BMI (body mass index) even before you get to a quote stage and they will get a company that can offer you cover which may not be the cheapest... but they will offer you cover... and this is what you want at the end, right?

By any chance do you know your BMI? Are you sure that you have been declined soley for your BMI? No other health issues at all? My tip would be AXA or Liverpool Victoria - AXA BMI tables start at 36.9 up to which point you will get standard rates, depending on your age you can get standard rates with Liverpool Victoria with BMI up to 38.0. Above that they may well require medical exams and will put the cost up.

Anyway, speak to a broker. If you have been declined elsewhere this is the best thing to do.

I think that buying from a site that cant even spell insurance on its web page gives you an indication of lack of quality you are likely to suffer.

Cost isnt just about the premium you pay. Just look at how many DIY life assurance policies that have been set up over recent years where the individual is going to get hit with a 40% tax liability on death because they didnt set it up correctly. Yes they saved a few pounds on the monthly premium but 40% of the sum assured is a bigger hit.

  • Hi Joisey,

Sorry to hear you've been having trouble sorting your life assurance out.

To be honest, if you've only spoken to Legal and General and Friends Provident, you aren't getting a good range of views on weight.

There are a lot of companies who will be willing to offer you cover with a rating depending on your height and weight.

Like ppl have recommended, you'd be best to get onto a comparison website and then speak to an advisor (one that won't charge you a fee) who'll be able to point you in the direction of a company who are sympathetic to your pregnancy weight gain.

I can recommend top quote uk for their free, independent advice and quotes.

    Hope that helps!
