Free Eye Tests on NHS usually apply to those on Allowances and Benefits, Pregnancy, Diabetics, Family History of Glaucoma, Complex Prescriptions, Children, Some Students IIRC from my Opticians Days. £20 though is pretty good value for an Eye Test IMO.

Contact Lens Tests almost always have to be paid for. NHS tests will never include Contact Lens Tests as they are percieved as a luxury good as opposed to Specs. There were very occasionally times (It happen once in my 2 years at an Opticians) where Contact Lenses had to be supplied as an essential item, so NHS paid a contribution to them to the Patient, but no more that they paid towards equivalent Glasses. Remember the Contact Lens Test is over and above you Eye Test and should be carried out every year.

A Free Eye Test, be it NHS or Company promo, will never be any different because its free. The Optomoetrist still has to check the same things, fill in the same records. This cant be skimped on for obvious legal reasons and health care reasons.

What is worth checking though is if your employer pays for your sight test or has a deal going with a local Optician. Anyone who uses a DSE for over a couple of hours a day can usually have their eye test paid for by their company. However a lot of companies dont advertise this to their employees!

If your lucky enough to live in Scotland you will shortly be able to receive free eye tests for all although I'm unsure of the exact date this comes into effect.

What I do know is that ASDA scotland are doing free eye tests now ahead of the official legislation.

I had mine tested a couple of weeks back - very thorough and friendly qualified optician who answered all my petty questions.

Your D&A experience is different to mine.

Here you can either pay £30 for a contact lens trial 7 prescription or sign up for their contact lens scheme and not be charged. The contact lens scheme starts at £11 a month.

If you start the scheme then phone them up and say you are not wearing the contacts as often as thought (I have daily disposables) they will suspend your direct debit and you can still retain all the other benefits eg free eyecare and half price glasses.

The cheapest contact lens scheme I have found is at Costco. £9.99 for a fitting and a years aftercare. The lens are bought separately but the costs are about the same as the online rates.

thanks for that advice. The D & A I go to have not offered me the £30 contact lens trial thing - maybe I will change opticians.
