OP if the jobcentre give you interviews that are not on your signing day you are entitled to your fares back, if you give them a reciept they will give you them.

My experience with new deal was the same, had my money stopped for not attending interview when there had been no interview made in the first place, it seems everyone says "well the jobcentre staff are very busy" but then there are so many mistakes, why am i seeming to always be the unlucky one whos had mistakes on their claim? They are so busy they cant possibly do their jobs?
I dunno, i think there is a lot of ignorance about especially the assumers who blurt out rude, personal remarks to unemployed without knowing them or their circumstances.

If new deal was stopped all the signed people would go on the unemployment figure, i bet it would be over 3 million in reality, i think the govornment do these schemes to keep "official" unemployment figures down.

OP I think your treatment was unfair too, if what your saying is completely accurate. I remember the first ever time I had to sign on (about 4 weeks ago) and I'm busy doing everything and theres some woman in there wanting help with filling in budgeting loan forms, and the JobCentre refused to help, and she was escorted off the building for refusing to take no for an answer as they said they apparently didn't have anyone experienced enough to help her. She was almost crying the poor woman, it was horrible to watch.

It makes you wonder what sort of desperation this woman and indeed the OP were in to have to voice themselves the way they did, just to be acknowledged and try and get the help that they are entitled to.

How is £60/week a modest income? Could you live on it if your wages were so reduced? I bet you'd struggle.

I think that you don't understand the meaning of the phrase "modest income". You're also totally ignoring the money people get for housing.

    .

But if they didn't have someone there to help, perhaps she should have accepted that and not kicked off about it. Would you start bawling in that situation because I know I wouldn't.

Personally, no I wouldn't cry. But then again I'm lucky enough as to never have had to be in that sort if position. She wasn't shouting, all she wanted was some help. If I walked into a place with 20-odd employees I'd expect one of them be able to help with filling in a form that I needed guidance with.

Don't get me wrong, I think he jobcentre staff do a terrific job with the amount of work they have currently. I feel though a little empathy to a persons situation has been lost.

If I worked there and someone came in and said because of their circumstances, they had no money and had to walk 8km home, I'd pay their bus fare myself or try my damned hardest to get some help for them. Maybe that's just me being a human though.

The trouble is, if you did that for everyone all your salary would go on it.

Unless someone's old, disabled or has small children, an 8km walk is no big deal.

I would of helped her fill the form in, they are easy. I think a 8km walk is a lot for someone with a cold/flu symptoms, thats just me being human too, and again he was entitled to his fares and they said there was nothing they could do, he has been given a raw deal IMO.

Just a few points picked up on reading the replies on this thread, JC staff and staff at these so called training centres are all under pressure to get people back into work, but its the way people are treated that infuriates the unemployed. Yes there are those that do not want to work and need to be pushed but to treat us all the same is disgusting, having just finished a new deal course (13 weeks of boredom!) i find myself in the same position as before i started, having to sign back on and still looking for work.
The idea of this "new deal" is to get the long term unemployed back into work but if they think this can be acheived by forcing people to do voluntary work for their dole money then it will not work. As you are not registered unemployed while on this course you are in effect working for your dole, this amounts to virtual slave labour (just over £2 per hour) and of course if you refuse then you are thrown off the course and your benefit stopped.
As for volunteering "Olderbutwiser" says there is no downside to volunteering but there is, my own experience has shown me that volunteers will be put upon more and more while the paid workers sit back and do less and less, which is why i gave up volunteer work years ago, why should i do the same work for nothing as someone who is paid a good wage.
The idea of new deal is good but flawed in every aspect of its execution, from the top to the very bottom.

i think its crazy that the jc staff are under pressure to get people back into work how can they, they dont dish out the jobs its the companies that do.

The government have even cut jobs so its odd.

Its a shambles, totally screwed up in every way, i dont think it can screwed up any more unless the jobcentre start charging to look at job vacancies. :D

Oh my god. Don't give them ideas!

Trying to claim back travel expenses is so hard, maybe if I bought an iphone it'd be easier to claim back?!
