At least voluntary work fills up a gap on your Cv and shows willingness to work?

possibly but i think alot of people are under the illusion that if you get a voluntary job you will get a paid job it dosent always work.

I don't think that people should expect to get a paid job in the place where they volunteer but voluntary work can do nothing except improve someone's CV , give them new or updated skills and give them an up to date reference. There's no real downside to volunteering.

    And you shouldn't.

I can well understand the frustration of the OP (taking his story on face value, i have no reason to assume it's all a wind up) if he has no money left to even get home. The JC behaved with reprehensible irresponsibility that's all too common these days.

This silly attitude people have of stoicness is really just stupidity. It isn't heroic or rewarding to turn up for work sick. All you do is make other people (including peopel who might be severely affected) ill. This ide of 'soldiering on' really bugs me and is used by people like this poster as a way to bully others: if you don't 'soldier on' or 'man up' you are thus lazy. It's disgusting. I also note the snide attitude toward the unemployed here. Perhaps this poster could explain what is meant by his last sentence; who says he has no purpose? What a sad world we live in where people are intrinsically thought of as worthless unless they are someone's wage slave.

I have chosen to go with the condensed version of my response as I feel it is all that is required.

This is a public forum, OP came on here to rant and seek feedback. Feedback was given. Am I snide in my attitude to the unemployed? Absolutely not, I am passionate about supporting anyone who wants help. Read my other posts if you don't agree.

No, the courses are there to provide profit for crony organisations that are friendly with the likes of James Purnell and Theresa May (who if anything is even worse - and a tory hardline on welfare is what we can look forward to from 2010 sadly). It's all based on the American model (and we know how they love the welfare state) and that's all based on making money. Disgusting really, but no one wants to believe anythign but the worst about unemployed people and so nothing will change for the better.

I don't see how a hardline approach to Welfare is a bad thing though-despite what you say about bad treatment, you are very lucky to live in a country that allows unlimited handouts. Bottom line is, right now I could sign on and basically stay that way until there's a change in the law-I find that scary. Or I could leave my job, have a baby every year for the next 10 years at the tax payers expense and nobody would say 'hang on a minute love..' . How is that a good thing for society, please tell me I would love to know??

OP, you are wrong about there being no laws relating to trespass in Scotland. Although they will differ to those in England, they do exist. Perhaps you could spend your current free time researching them?
    Gone ... or have I?
  • It's not like you've got anything to do with your time anyway apart from moan on online forums about how hard done by you are.

You are again making assumptions about the kind of person I am based on the fact I am unemployed. I have been (pretty solidly since mid-december) learning three programming languages to improve my employability and in addition was looking into starting my own business, both these things had to be put on the back burner thanks to this course. Instead I must now spend 8 hours a day doing nothing and spend my nights looking for work.
  • Its really great to have so many strangers immediately treat me like a leeching waster scumbag, makes me proud to be British!

Anyhoo.. I went back into today, my appointment was for 3pm.

I sat for 1 hour and 15 minuets before I was actually seen to. The nice security lady who was on today kept asking the staff why I was left sitting, they kept going away to "find out" and never came back! What was even more surprising is that she noticed I was coughing and sputtering and asked me if I would like a drink of water! :rotfl:

After filling in all the forms by myself (I informed them I was dyslexic) it turned out that they had given me the wrong forms and in fact I was booked in for the wrong thing and should have been there to re-sign on.

At one point she was checking my records to see which date I was claiming from, I asked to see the list she was looking at. No appointment was listed for me for Friday, so they had indeed lied to me on Monday.

I am looking into getting copies of the CCTV footage via the Data Protection Act.

Losing your cool, getting personal or worse it what gets people kicked out of jobcentres. I now see why you were so ready to come to the defense of the OP.

Except nothing that you list happened, at no point did I loose my cool, nor did I say anything which was not related to my claim. You are making assumptions about the event because you want to believe that since I am unemployed I must be a knuckle dragging waster.

I'd say what the bouncers done was way over the top. Also dont think many people realise that the flu can keep people in bed for days unable to move. Finding work in Scotland can be utter hell, When most companies seem to be laying people off or closing down. Ignore the trolls, Which I'd say is half this thread.

Just a few points picked up on reading the replies on this thread, JC staff and staff at these so called training centres are all under pressure to get people back into work, but its the way people are treated that infuriates the unemployed. Yes there are those that do not want to work and need to be pushed but to treat us all the same is disgusting, having just finished a new deal course (13 weeks of boredom!) i find myself in the same position as before i started, having to sign back on and still looking for work.
The idea of this "new deal" is to get the long term unemployed back into work but if they think this can be acheived by forcing people to do voluntary work for their dole money then it will not work. As you are not registered unemployed while on this course you are in effect working for your dole, this amounts to virtual slave labour (just over £2 per hour) and of course if you refuse then you are thrown off the course and your benefit stopped.
As for volunteering "Olderbutwiser" says there is no downside to volunteering but there is, my own experience has shown me that volunteers will be put upon more and more while the paid workers sit back and do less and less, which is why i gave up volunteer work years ago, why should i do the same work for nothing as someone who is paid a good wage.
The idea of new deal is good but flawed in every aspect of its execution, from the top to the very bottom.
