But I think even they now realise that the communist idealogy was somewhat flawed. ;)

    Hi crownpassage

Sorry for the delay replying. I have been out of the office recently. :j

Economy 18 meters are for customers with an electric combination boiler and any of the following.

Off Peak space and water heating.
    Under floor heating.
    Electric flow heaters.
    Redring boilers.

We have found that customers with these types of set up often require their heating on for long periods. Therefore, the tariff gives 18 hours of lower cost electricity per day for dedicated electric space and water heating equipment.

The 18 hours are spread out over the day in three separate periods.

Economy 18 is more of a comfort tariff than an economic one.

Although this tariff has risen by more than standard prices over the last few years the heating rates remain lower than standard.

It is a matter of balance. This works well for some customers but not for others. If you feel you are not benefiting fully from Economy 18 it is possible to change your meter and go on to another tariff.

To do this I would recommend contacting our metering people.

Changing to a standard meter would give you the option of several tariffs. You could keep Economy 7 if you wish. There is also the option of online tariffs and capped prices. It just depends on what is best for you.

Again, sorry for the slow response but hope this helps a little. :)

When we built our new house four years ago we had to decide whether to instal oil or electric heating, there is no gas in our village. We were advised to go with an ACV electric boiler running off the Economy 18 tariff as this was designed to keep down costs with this type of boiler. We were told that this was because we would not have supply at the times of high general usage i.e. breakfast, lunch and dinner times. We were advised to instal a standard service to provide supply for cooking and lighting so that we would not be impacted by the unavailability of supply at these times. It was offered as an economy supply not a comfort supply. The paperwork I have from Powergen at the time of the installation states: "Domestic 18 hour heating tariff from Powergen allows the design of economical to run electric space and water heating systems, with many advantages than have been possible before. This results in smaller heating equipment, lower installed electrical loads, simplified controls, more flexibility, the use of heating systems that would not have been viable (wet systems) and lower equipment and installation capitalcapital costs."
All of which along with the tariff name promotes the economy not comfort of the tariff
I have now checked back to the original pricing in July 2005 and find that all the elements of the Economy 18 tariff have increased by 87% whereas the primary rate of my standard service has increased by 122% and the secondary by 41%, probably and average of 50 - 55% for my usage much obviously lower for standard users. You must understand my concern that Economy 18 users actual increase has been more than 50% higher than standardusers i.e. 87% against 50 - 55%. And this for a service that was sold as an economy service.

    Hi crownpassage

I do understand your concern regarding the price increases you have had on the Economy 18 tariff since 2005.

Price changes are commercial decisions taking into account many different factors. I am not personally privy to the decision making process in these cases.

However, this is excellent feedback and I will happily pass this up the ladder.

I Justice received my electricity bill (economy 18 with stored heating plan) and it says my day time electricity use is three-times higher than my night time use. I can't see how that could be the case. So what I'm wondering is does anyone know what time night units begin and end?

    Hi neroon

The exact switching times for Economy 18 will depend on the set up of your particular meter.

Drop an email with your details to the address in my Public Profile if you would like me to have a look at your metering set up. Will be happy to help. :)

Hi, I realise it is some time ago that this thread was posted but I have an ongoing problem with E18 - (see separate threads.) I am in contact with Eon's complaints department and have been checking meter readings since April this year. My main comlaint is that my day usage is also higher even though I know that my consumption is low - ASHP is timed to come on using stored heat tariff - in fact during summer months, since March this year, have only used ASHP for heating hot water and since a reading taken in May have not used any units. Dishwasher is run using night time rate, washing machine is used during 18.30-22.30 period which I think is using heating and appliance cheaper rate. However when checking my meter readings over the last few days it seems I only use about 2-3 units between 9 am and 18.00 but between 18.00 and 09.00 it uses 5 units, in that period I thought that there would be approx 4 hours on the higher rate tariff. Therefore am I correct in thinking that the period between 18.30 and 22.30 is at a cheaper rate, i.e. heating and appliance use? I am not so much concerned about the charge for the heating and night rates but it does seem that the day rate charge is high when my usage is lower but still seems to cost more! Malcolm - can you confirm that my interpretation of the timings is correct please regarding the tariff between 18.30 to 22.30. Many thanks.

    Hi cfj

Sorry to hear you are still having problems with your metering set up.

Economy 18 meters provide 18 hours of lower cost electricity per day for dedicated electric space and water heating equipment.

Within this 18 hour period, there are 5 hours for general domestic usage which can be used for higher load household appliances like tumble dryers, dish washers.

The exact switching times will depend on the metering set up at your particular property. However, each period will be no shorter than 4 hours in duration and the interval between each period will be no longer than 2 hours.

Please see below a rough guide to the switching times.

00.30am to 7.30am - space and water heating plus 5 hours for general appliances.

9.30am to 4.30pm - space and water heating only.

6.30pm to 10.30pm - space and water heating only.

Therefore, if you are using high load appliances between 6.30pm and 10.30pm, the electricity used will be charged at the higher day rate. It is only the water/heating which attracts the cheaper rate during this period.

As I say, the above times are a rough guide only. For the exact timings, you will need to speak to our specialist metering people. Alternatively, drop an email to the address in my Profile and I will be happy to have a look for you.

Hope this helps a little cfj. Give me a shout if I can help further.

Thanks Malc - I think this is where I have been going wrong - I thought i could use appliances between 18.30 and 22.30 at the cheaper rate. (I am afraid I couldn't work out what your email address is).
