Is there any reason the OP isn't suggesting users change the default passwords on routers?

With all this security in place, all somebody need to is go to a generic web address (usually and put the default passowrd in, then they're free to change the security settings to their own preference.

    hi buddy

reread the post and you will see"Change default router username and passwords. Most routers have the same, default admin username and password for admin / setup purposes. So all an intruder has to do is login to your router using the defaults and then lock you out."

No offence meant here, but why does mardatha need to use Netstumbler. The other wireless network in the vicinity is nothing to be concerned about, the security of their own network is the concern here, so a copy of the manual for whatever router they are using would be a much more useful download.

The reason the other network comes and goes is either because the owner of it switches it off when no-one is using it or because the signal quality is poor and, like a poor radio signal, it can come and go according to weather conditions.

Worry about your own network, not someone else's.

Sorry to repeat myself but you cannot just log on to someone's router even if you know the router's user name and password.
You have to connect to their network first which, as long as they have security enabled, will be very difficult.

So mardatha's priority should be to enable wireless security on their router asap.

If he/she wants to post the make and model of their router and the OS of their PC then I'm sure we'll be able to help.

And how exactly will Netstumbler help them?
edit - sorry Lum you beat me to it!:p

Yes I know, but it was good of the poster to answer me. And I did quite wonder why the other network was on at 4.30 am and then not at 10am , just seems odd when I know the habits of all my neighbours. However I have phoned the wee computer shop and arranged to take the router in and they will secure it for me. You learn new things ev3ery day on MSE ! :)

    hi there

remember that the clients (pcs / laptops / games consoles etc) will need to be reconfigured with the new secure router settings too
