Teacher training days

So they should. You must know very little about children if you don't realise that different age ranges learn different things at school. Therefore the teachers will need different training.
I also dispute your assertion that I "must know very little about children if I don't realise that different ages learn different things at school" as I have fifteen years experience teaching in both Secondary and Primary Schools. Even people who are not teachers would realise that different ages learn different things; in fact, different abilities within the same age group learn different things.
Teachers will need different training from one Primary to another or one Secondary to another; however, you would think that the two Headteachers would be able to co-ordinate their INSET days to SOME extent, especially as I am talking about an Infants and Juniors School which would fall under the umbrella of Primary.0 -
Little reward, you get paid . As for people having cushy jobs Id like to see teachers working in the nhs and do the hours nurses do. Iv done it.
Intelligent, if your jobs are so bad why do it. I know because you are well paid.
I do it because I love kids and I love teaching. If I wanted to make money, I'd have trained to be a lawyer or accountant - seems a bit of a no brainer to me!
Nurses are also undervalued and underpaid, and get little thanks (often) for the work the do - it's not a competition to find the most undervalued public sector worker.
It's hard if you have to work around different INSET days, but different schools have different training needs - especially if one is primary, and one secondary - so I think this is difficult to avoid in practice.
I thought Denise might have the making of a good teacher! She had a really good rapport - but yes, had to smile at her constant refrain of 'I'm an actresssssssss...'!0 -
Why do you call it teacher bashing when a parent points out that a training day has fallen on a school day and asks why it can not take place in the school holidays.0

Out of interest, how do which days are going to be inset days get decided?
The majority of the time our inset days are a friday or a monday tagged onto a school hol. Sometimes they are due to the school being used a polling station. Unfortunate timing for the next one (IMO) as the schools no sooner go back next Monday after a week's break, then the school is shut on Thursday cos of voting. But that's not the school's fault.
Occassionally they are a random friday or monday anywhere (I like these, I look for cheap CP breaks for those dates.;))0 -
They are generally set by the Local Authority so that schools in the same area have the same dates. I think schools might have some say if they have a specific issue with a particular date though. Most local authorities have 'advised' INSET days on their term date listings, and in practise, I think most.schools adhere to these as best they can.0

Days are chosen mainly so that they are spread fairly evenly through the year and availability of trainers taken into account. We went for Mondays and Fridays because, having taken soundings, parents said they preferred it that way. Some found it easier to tag childcare onto weekends (children taken to grandparents or parents often worked half day on Friday in our area) others took the opportunity to take a leave day and go away for the weekend.0 -
we moved to a new school this easter so had a lot of our inset days then so we could get moved, the abuse i got off people who knew where i worked was incredible (im not a teacher btw, im a technician). i spent 5 weeks in total packing and unpacking - and all i got was "why did they have extra time off, why didnt you just work through easter?" i pointed out that by that time i had spent as long as i had sorting out things out i felt i needed a break - in fact most of us did work lots over the hols but after the comments i wished i hadn't.
even my best friend said we should have taught until the friday, moved over easter and been back teaching after the 2 week holiday - pointed out that it took longer than that to pack her house!'We're not here for a long time, we're here for a good time0 -
In the school where I work most teachers arrive before 8 am and leave after 5 pm
Big deal.
I do at least those hours along with millions of other working people. (and i would be willing to bet i am higher qualified aswell)
But i also ge less than 30 days holiday a year. How many do you get again?milliebear00001 wrote: »These sorts of threads always make me smile. My stock answer to all the people who think teachers are lazy/have it easy/get great holidays/get paid well/are over-priviledge/work limited hours/suit themselves rather than parents and children blah blah, is...if it's such a great job, how come you're not doing it?
Thats like asking why we arent all fighter pilots or zookeepers.
What amsues me, especially reading 'teacher' responses in this thread, is the way in which you portray yourselves as hard done by but also academically elite in some way.0 -

Why do you call it teacher bashing when a parent points out that a training day has fallen on a school day and asks why it can not take place in the school holidays. I have no problem with teachers at my dd school and I support the education of my child where possible.
In my dd school there have been a number of days when training has taken place just before a school holiday
Lots of parents work unsociable hours for a lot less pay but dont have the amount of holidays that teachers get. I dont think its much to ask for training days to be taken during a school holiday . Parents have to arrange childcare or lose pay so why should our opinion not count.
I dont condone parents who verbally or physically assult teachers my children are well thought of and very polite. How has my post become a teachers bashing.
Im sure that there are lots of teachers who give their free time to help students but equally lots of parents do. I go on school trips, help with reading and not always with my child.
On another point I notice that cars are not parked outside my dd school on school holidays, why, because I live oppisite.
Your children, your responsibility. You know when you decide to take a particular job that you will have to provide care for your children when they are not in school. Thank goodness nowdays you get sufficient notice to arrange this.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
