Husband redundant - help

Hi all
DH was told at work last night (on a Sunday before Bank Hol - thanks!) that he is being made redundant. He has a week to work at the end of which he'll get his months pay (its due on Friday) and a weeks extra. And thats it. He was told he "may" get some redundacy money and IF he does it will be around £1800. We won't know until Friday. Thats going to be an excrutiating wait! Why they can't just tell him one way or another as that £ would really help!!

Anyway - plan of action for when everything opens tomorrow
Ring CCCS re situation (we are on a dmp) and see if we can drop to token payments again for the meantime.
Ring HB (we get a small amount a month) and advise them of the situation and do a new claim for HB & see if we can get C Tax Ben.
Ring Tax credits - renew for the year and tell them of the situation.

Today: Revamp CV and apply for everything we can online. There isn't a lot locally, even Tescos arent hiring here when they usually always want staff.

A question: He "finishes" work on Thursday as he has hols booked Friday-Sunday so from the Monday is it best to go to the Job Centre and sign on? JSA etc is beyond me - no idea how it works?

I've been on entitledto.com and put in the figures as 0 for him and what i earn (is this right) to see what we are possibly entitled to - how accurate is this?

So many question sorry. I think if I just keep planning I won't panic!

Thanks all

    Hi

I'm so sorry that your husband is getting made redundant next week. I know it's hard but try not to panic. I'd say that if he signs on on the Monday after he finishes they should be able to give him some advice and get him onto the system. I haven't signed on for a long time ( I was self employed so am not eligible) but I'm sure someone will be along soon who can give you more help.

    Thanks Cuddlymarm -
What a rubbish situation eh! I'm sorry for you who are also in the situation.

I'm a natural worrier so this calm might be the calm before the storm but I'm trying tp focus on the practical things first. Thank God for MSE.

Hopefully someone will know how accurate entitled to is etc.

    Hi again

I found that I feel more in control if I keep an eye on the MSing side of things. Making things last, cutting down on gas and electric etc. Its the fear of the unknown and the waiting to get on with things that i find hard but at the end of the day we are better off than a lot of people and this is just a temporary blip in our lives. Try to keep positive. I think a lot of people are having a lie in so I'd bump this thread back up to the top if no one answers.

    Thanks Cuddles!
Unfortunately we have already cut down to the bare bones and were struggling to meet the dmp as it was (and have sold anything not nailed down lol!!!) but where there is a will theres a way!

This site link will tell you what your husband statutorily is due for redundancy and has a redundancy calculator on it
    www.businesslink.gov.uk

It is from the employers perspective, but tells you everything you need to know about minimum redundancy payments.

Also ensure your OH is paid for any outstanding holiday.

    Good luck

I think for the first 6 months he may possibly be entitled to contribution-based JSA (It's certainly worth a try anyway, but thereafter he'd have to reapply for income-based, and if you earn over a certain amount (depending on whether you have children etc) then you might not get anything. )HTH.
Sounds like you're doing everything right so far though. Good luck!
Owing to financial constraints, the light at the end of the tunnel has been switched off until further notice. :(

Thanks both & will have a good look at that link too - Its a very small business and they are struggling so have let one go - hubby was first but suspect more will come. I'll be much happier if he does get a cheque for £1800 as that is basically 2 months wage which will buy some time.
I'm hoping he'll get something else pdq! (As is he).
    Thanks all

Definitely hope then that we get the £1800 mentioned - its three times what the calculator says he is intitled to!!

Depending on how long your OH has been employed he is entitled to minimum statutory redundancy pay,
    http://www.berr.gov.uk/whatwedo/employment/employment-legislation/employment-guidance/page33157.html

If the firm cannot pay he can claim from the government

Thanks Numpty x Hes entitled to £600 apparently so will hold and see if the boss gives him the suggested amount of £1800 and if not then push for the unmentioned SRP. Thanks.
Wish it was tomorrow so I could start ringing around!
