Can I get my paypal/ebay fees refunded??

I sold an ornament recently, and sent it via Royal Mail. The ornament was in top condition and well packaged. The buyer has just received it, and have emailed saying it's broken.
I telephoned Royal Mail requesting compensation on the item. They said they would give me the value of the item. I told them the price the item sold for. I really should've added on postage costs, but I'm an honest soul.
I informed the buyer that Royal Mail said they would refund me (remains to be seen), and that I would refund the buyer not only the price they paid for the item, but the postage cost they paid initially too as long as they returned the ornament to me.
I have since had an email from the buyer saying they are without an ornament and postage costs out of pocket, could I do anything?

I re-itterated I was willing to refund the buyer, and that in effect I was the biggest loser, because I will have a returned item I can't sell ect.. ect..

Anyway, am I entitled to claim back the paypal/ebay fees I paid once I've refunded the buyer??

+ any other help with regards to this situation would be helpful too. :)

  • If you refund the buyer the correct way via PayPal, you will get reimbursed the fees I believe. However I don't believe you can be reimbursed for any eBay fees.

You can claim back your FVFs from e-Bay once you refund your buyer as technically once you have refunded them they haven't paid for the item so are a non payer.

Do the mutual option though as it's not buyers fault that it was delivered broken, this means they won't get a strike on their account.

You should have included the postage costs, there isn't anything dishonest about it. Postage costs are part of the item price.

I once made a claim with Royal Mail for something I received damaged from an eBay seller. I wrote a letter clearly stating the item and postage costs seperately and the cheque they sent had the two costs added together.

I think it would be too late to do that now. I've already informed Royal mail via telephone the cost of the item only.

Royal Mail do not refund the post and packing element of a claim, it is a personal bug bear of mine as I can't see how they can get away with it. On rare occasions a new member of staff will refund the lot, but you have to be lucky.

Also, refund the buyer the full amount they paid as if you don't and they do a chargeback they'll get the full refund anyway and you'll get a warning on your paypal account. As has already been said if you refund the original paypal payment you get the fees back on that paypal payment anyway. here was a thread on here last week if you want to look at it asking what to refund in the case of a buyer claim and 99% of respondents said refund the lot.

Lastly you were also lucky to get the rM to agree to refund anyway as china and stuff is not covered for breakage. I found this out recently when I decided to start selling a few china and glass items I buy at auction.

Well haven't received money off royal mail yet, even tho' they did agree over the telephone  I will contact them again on Monday to check how my claim is going.

Yes I also intend refunding the whole payment to the buyer. Obviously I gotta wait for them to return the item to me.

Actually got an email from the buyer this morning, asking if they keep the ornament and stick the broken bit back on, would I refund them since I'm getting it back off Royal Mail. They even said they'd send me a pic to prove the ornament arrived broken. I'd certainly consider it once I've had my cash from Royal mail. Some people request the oddest of deals.

this sounds a little fishy to me.......

definately do not refund anything until you have the item returned to.
as to a full refund.... surely not.... if they keep the item, different if royal mail do give you a full refund...... even then, the buyer is keeping the item and getting a refund.
offer a partial refund and tell a white lie about the royal mail......
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)
  • The buyer did say, she would accept a refund of the cost of the item, and that I could keep her postage cost.

Anyway, I have informed her that I will give refund once Royal Mail have issued me with my claim money.

I don't mind her keeping the ornament if I get my money from Royal Mail, but she is getting squat until then, or umtil she returns the ornament to me.

Yes is fishy isn't it.. never happened before anyway.

Why should the buyer keep the item (even if it is broken) AND a refund???

Did they mail you a pic of the 'broken' item?

They could be trying it on if not.

  • They have offered to mail me a pic of the broken item, I think I'll aske them to send me it via email whilst I'm waiting on Royal Mail.

Don't what they'll gain if they are trying it on. No money from RM, buyer gets no money from me unless item is returned.
