How to approach a neighbour to buy some of his land!

Hi,
Not sure if this is posted in the correct place, so I'm hoping it gets found by someone!
We purchased a house about a year ago which was built within the grounds of our neighbour. When we purchased it, the then vendor mentioned that the neighbour may be willing to sell more land to go with our property.
A year has passed and we would be interested to buy some land from our neighbour, if he is willing.
However, he is a neighbour that keeps himself to himself and we have probably only seen him once in all this time.
So we thought it would be a good idea to ask him by letter instead of knocking on his door?
Can anyone recommend a good way to approach this, and how the letter should be written?

I'd write a letter with the sentence that if you don't hear back from him within a set period, say a few weeks then you'll assume he is not interested...0 -
....or.........creep up on him from behind..............with a fist full of £50 notes........and whisper........."Loads a dosh......".....

i think i would write a letter and say i was going to knock in a week's time to see if it is convenient to discuss it further - you could say that if you are not interested it would be appreciated if you could pop a note through our door so we won't bother you otherwise you will call and say time and date when you hope to arrange a suitable time for further discussion or you could give him your phone number and ask him to ring you to arrange a chat if he would prefer thatThe mind is like a parachute. It doesn’t work unless it’s open.:o

We would like to buy a peice of land from our neighbour but we know the house is rented, can anyone advise how we would go about finding the owner? We do not know the tennants either so not sure if approaching them would be the best option.0
