Organic Milk

Hi sorry to start a fresh thread if there is already one for this:o

I sat down to have my breakfast a short time ago and found the milk tasted funny.

Had a quick look at the bottle and the milk was still in date so no problem there. The taste was that bad I had to bin my cereal. Answer to the problem? Co-op Organic milk!

Now I was brought up on a farm so know what milk should taste like. It was straight from our cows no pasteurisation or anything. And yes I survived to tell the tale:p

But this milk I had this morning was disgusting. It actually tasted as if for authenticity they had added the smell from our milking parlour to the milk.

All my years being reared on fresh cows milk i never tasted milk like this. The only way to describe it is milk with a good dollop of cow poop essence!

My dog is allergic to dairy so I had to bin my brekkie. Now sitting with a nice bowl of cereal with run of the mill milk, not quite the quality of the good old stuff from the farm but way better than that other muck!

Sorry just had to have a rant I cant believe people buy this stuff!

Rant over :o:o:o:o

Maybe you had a bad bottle?
I always buy organic milk now, and a few weeks ago I got a bottle which tasted chemically and tainted. I returned it to Tesco and it was sent away for testing. They wrote back that the taste was from the way that the bottle had been sealed - they use heat to make the little plastic lid stick to the bottle (not the screw lid if you get what I mean)- and that if it is heated for too long it makes the milk taste funny.
I would suggest you return it and buy another, from a different batch and asked for it to be sent for checking.
Now, I don't drink milk these days, but my OH and kids tell me there is no discernable taste difference between "normal" milk and organic, so I'd imagine that your bottle was bad in some way.

I too remember drinking milk "straight from the cow" as a child and agree that it tastes very different from pasteurised bottled stuff it's a shame we can't buy it still.

    It's only a game

  • Thank you! I did wonder if it tasted like this why on earth would people buy it! :rotfl:

Our nearest supermarket is twenty miles away and normally buy milk from the local village shop. If heading into town I might take it back, but obviously will not be making a special trip.

All this talk of milk I want some of the 'real' stuff....some of my friends live on dairy farms....think a wee visit to them might be required :D

I too was brought up on unpasteurised milk and milk products - never did me any harm

You can't buy raw milk in Scotland these days on account of the risk of TB (and haven't been able to buy it for a number of years)

We have organic milk delivered by the milkman. We have never had a bad bottle. You were very unlucky but in any system, there will be occasional problems.

I buy organic semi-skimmed for my daughters & they do sometimes complain of a 'funny taste'. It always seems to be after I've bought normal milk (if/when the Co-op run out ) & then returned to the organic milk. Never thought that organic/normal milk might taste different but it appears from this thread that they do.

In my experience the co op organic milk is ok in itself, when I've had dodgy milk from there t's the local co op store that's at fault - they leave the milk out in the store on trolleys for way too long sometimes before loading it onto the shelves and it does go off ( I've found this with normal milk too )

There is a definite taste difference between decent organic milk and bog standard, but the best of all, if you can use it, is unpasteurised raw milk - I can buy it from a local farm shop and it's made from milk from their Jersey herd on the farm. You have to use it up quickly but it is DELICIOUS.

I find there is a definite taste difference as well between organic and conventional milk - defo prefer the organic, quite apart from the fact that the main reason I buy organic is its healthier.

Wish I could ever find raw milk - I've never seen any signs of it whatsoever near me. I gather thats a lot healthier still - and I know what its like, as there was a time I lived on a farm for a while and was used to having that.

Does anyone avoid amalgamated milk? I've been wondering if I should but then I've sort of been assuming it's pretty hard to avoid. I'm not even sure if the milk from the milkman is amalgamated

We've recently switched to organic milk and the only real difference DH & I find is that we reckon the organic tastes creamier. We still buy semi-skimmed, but DH reckons the organic one tastes more like full fat!

On the subject of milk......how do you know if goat's milk has gone off? May sound daft, but I had some which was a week out of date, but still tasted the same to me, and it didn't curdle in coffee or anything. Would I know if it was off?

Not sure what you mean by amalgamated milk - could you explain?
