Long story coming up.
I have suffered with depression all my life, this past three years I have had clinical depression and now my Psyic thinks I have Bi-Polar. I don't know how but I work full time (35 hours over 4 day) I take fridays off so I can rest. Last thurday I went to bed at 10pm got up Fri at 7.30, went back to bed at 9.30am and slept (uninterruped) till 17.40pm then went back to bed at 10pm (Is this normal). I sleep in my lunch breaks. My short tearm memory is so bad. I forget questions I am about to ask, I forget my son is in the car untill I get to work (he is a quiet child). I have been driving and I have forgot what to do next. I have really bad mood swings where I have done really stupid things.
Is all this "normal" and will this calm down once they change my meds.
I pay for my son to go to a pre-school 5 days a week, cause a don't want him to be around me when I am like this. I costs about £540 (That is the cheapist I can find. Can I get help towards this.
I currently get £10 per week child tax, no working tax and I dont clame DLA (don't know if I can clame it).
I just want to lead some sort of normal life.
Any polite advice is welcome.

Hi taz,
I think you need to talk to your doctor about this and explain how severe the situation is; it will probably calm down once meds have been sorted but in the meantime its a dangerous situation, for your safety and your lo, and for others if you have problems whilst driving. I know what its like to sleep with depression but I've never done it to the extent that you are doing. hope you doc can help.... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

Hi sorry you are having such a rough time, regarding Dla I would apply for this, if possible get help with the forms because they are a nightmare, the cab would be able to help you with filling the form in.
Not sure about the meds and help towards childcare but I am sure someone will be along shortly who will be able to help.
Take care and best wishes.

Hi Taz,
A close family member of mine has suffered depression for years and was given medication by her Doctor. Regarding your chronic tiredness, you may have an under-active thyroid, as she also suffered from being tired all the time and was given medication for it.Like good food and drink?
Try Hotel Chocolat and Baileys.

Re help towards your childcare costs, there are a few possibilities. It looks like you are already claiming tax credits, it is worth checking with them that they have your details correct and know how much you are paying per week for childcare, as dependent on income, you can receive a proportion of childcare in tax credits. But it might well be that you earn too much.
Another option is childcare vouchers. If your employer participates in one of these schemes, then you can choose for part of your salary to be paid to a childcare voucher provider, which will be gross of tax. It means that you can save about 20% of the cost, as you will pay for them out of your gross salary rather than your net salary. Even if you don't think your employer does this, it is worth checking with your HR department, and if they don't do it, asking them to consider it. We managed to get my husband's company to start doing them, and it saved us a few quid a month.
How old is your son? If he is 3 then you should be getting part of the nursery cost paid for by the local authority, the nursery would be able to help you apply for this, if you haven't already.
I suffer from depression too, and at points have had some of the symptoms that you mention. Wanting / needing to sleep forever is fairly common I think, both as a symptom of the depression itself, and as a side effect of the medication. It does sound like it would be a good idea talking to your GP / psychiatrist about changing your medication, to see if different meds could have lesser side effects and maybe help with your concentration.
Don't give up, you are doing brilliantly still working and looking after your son.0 -
you may have an under-active thyroid
I would have replyed earlier but I have yet again been asleep 11.30 till 15.00. My hubby is very caring but I can't help thinking he's getting sick of this, I know I am.
I hate to self diagnosis (I really do, it's one of my pet hates when people do it) but, I keep thinking I have something else as well as Bi-polar. Nothing bad, something that masks the bi-polar. I had my little boy in 2006 and when I was pregnant I knew I was'nt well then. It's only been this past few month they are saying I have bi-polar. I first went to see a CPN for PND (who was no help) I kept telling her that the way I feel it just can't be PND (Does that sound stupid ) It's like when you take your child to the doctors and he's says there is dothing wrong but you know there is, I knew it just wasn't PND. I has only been since I started CBT and been seeing my physicatic that I started getting answers.
The CBT said they would have found it sooner if I would have told them the symptoms I had been having.
the symptoms they mention, are normal day to day thing to me- difficulty sleeping and waking up early
- suicidal thoughts
- lack of energy,
- finding it difficult to concentrate and remember things,
- feeling full of great new ideas and having important plans,
- doing lots of pleasurable things which often have disastrous consequences, such as spending a lot of money which you cannot afford.
Thank you all for taking the time to reply to me, It really does mean a lot.:j Nuts about christmas since 1981:j

Have you had any blood tests? I only ask this because I was diagnosed with depression 18 months ago. I had CBT and antidepressants and improved but was still not myself. My counsellor suggested she thought it may be hormonal - so i asked my GP. She said "no" but to put my mind at rest did a blood test...it turns out I have PCOS. (polycystic ovaries). Just started the medication and already I feel 10x better. I am sure I had despression too but I think the PCOS was making it worse. (I had also put on loads of weight).
Your symptoms do sound like depression but there may also be something else contributing to it like Thyroid or PCOS.
If you don't get the answers from your GP you could also ask to see another one. My first GP was lovely but just seemed to want to give me medication. Lucklily I moved house and my new GP is fab.
I hope you get the help and answers you need. x"I am not a vegetarian because I love animals; I am a vegetarian because I hate plants." A. Whitney Brown0 -

I have a friend who suffers from bi-polar and she just cannot get up in the morning! She has given herself such a hard time thinking that she should get up but just can't. She will sleep from around 10pm through til 12noon the next day. She has been to her GP who took blood tests and they came back as normal.
Last week I asked one of the Doctors I work with (I work in a Specialist Unit for Elderly Mental Health) why my friend was like this. He confirmed that this sleepiness, not wanting to start the day, is a condition of Bi-Polar. So don't worry too much, it seems that it is quite normal. However, it may be best to speak to your psychiatrist and ask if there is anything they can do to help you - change meds or suchlike?Christians Against Poverty - www.capuk.org0 -
Oh, and she also claims DLA so get yourself a form and someone to help you fill it in (CAB or maybe someone at your Mental Health Unit would help).Christians Against Poverty - www.capuk.org0
