Hi everyone,
I've only just registered to this site but visit/have visited it for the last few years for tips and advice! so thanks to everyone:beer:
I am so bloody angry today. According to my calculations we should have had £150 + available to take out in our joint current account with the Clydesdale Bank (its a readycash account) but when i went to the cash machine it said i was £38 overdrawn?! I came home to check my internet banking and couldn't find anything on it that said why i was overdrawn so i phoned them up and they have told me that because i have a direct debit and 2 standing orders due to come out on TUESDAY 26th May, as well as my child benefit going in, they have already accounted for this and it has left us with no money! They have told me it is standard practice (although i can find no reference to it in my account terms and conditions!) and said there was nothing that could be done about it until tuesday. Can they really do this......take money out that isn't even due out for another 3 days?! Any advice would be welcome please, as i now have 3 hungry kids to feed and no money in my account until tuesday!!
Yours hopefully, Sarah

It doesn't seem quite right to me.
You've got money there and it's not up to them how you choose to use it.
And they don't know if you are going to make a deposit before your other payments out are due.
That said, if you then went overdrawn on your direct debits, you might (a) complain that they didn't warn you, and (b) complain that they charged you for it.
Me, I'd be off to a different bank.0 -

Sure they do: there are no bank working hours between now and then (Monday is a bank holiday).
How will you have money in your account on Tuesday?0 -
Hiya sarjay
Generally, you have to have the funds in your account and cleared for a direct debit the banking day before its due. Therefore for a dd due on Tuesday the funds wuld have to be in and cleared on Friday (due to Monday being a bank holiday) The bank then "earmarks" the funds and then releases them early Tuesday morning to the companies who are callng for them.
You would not have the opportunity to credit your account with money between end of Friday and early hours of Tuesday morning.
Some banks, however, do give some grace and take into account credit that are due inot the account the day a dd is due. I dont think Clydesdale would be one of these.
Hope this makes sense!Baby Ice arrived 17th April 2011. Tired.com! :j0 -
Only my Direct Debit for my council tax (£99) was actually due out on Monday, my partners wages and my child benefit are due in on tuesday (as is the same every week). I had planned to leave in the money for the DD - as i always do, but the rest is surely mine to use as i choose, not how they choose? I am going straight down there on tuesday morning to see the manager as i have never been informed of this ridiculous situation!0

Hiya again sarjay.
The fact remains that any dd's due sat sun mon or tues would be taken from whatever available balance at close of day FRIDAY. The funds for all these dd's would be earmarked and taken off you balance to release Tuesday Morning. This is standard banking practice.
I am sorry if this has caused you a problem.
Someting to bear in mind for next time maybe?Baby Ice arrived 17th April 2011. Tired.com! :j0 -
Thanks for your replies, and yeah i do understand that this may be standard practice but what is most annoying is that i have never been informed of this before! I have banked previously with Nationwide and Royal Bank of Scotland and have never had this done before!
If i had known about it, i would have made sure i have more money available to me from my other account! Luckily for me, i have a very kind mother-in-law! but am still going to see the bank manager on tuesday.
Thanks again fro your speedy replies

Hiya again.
Yeah it might be worth going into see them if you think the terms and conditions aren't clear.Baby Ice arrived 17th April 2011. Tired.com! :j0 -
It is common practice across several banks including the RBS group you have banked with previously.
Our child benefit also goes in to our Natwest account on Tuesday and was available to draw against today due to the bank holiday. If we had any direct debits due to go out on Tuesday these would also have been showing up and taken out of any money already in the account and/or the child benefit payment.0 -
Hi
I'm with their other half: Yorkshire bank and I have noticed that when checking my banking. I check say a friday evening and when I go into my Direct Debit's list, I check say Sky (due out Monday) and it is already showing that the DD has been taken!
The good side to this for me, my money is never due until Monday officially, but it's in my account late friday night:rolleyes:
