To take this thread on a minor detour - does anyone know if Visa Debit charges are applied when loading currency cards? Technically you are buying currency.0

I bought £2000 of STERLING travellers cheques from Travelx yesterday with an Aliiance and leicester visa debit. They have charged me £ 40 for the privelidge.
I queried it and was told they charged for foreign currency purchases. SO I have raised a complaint since it was neither currency nor foreign.
They also initially blamed travelX but when pushed came up with the "buying foreign currency" statement.0 -
Yes, A&L blame Visa. I think it probably is Visa who are levying the charge. But it could be that A&L are levying a higher charge to its customers. I will be interested to learn how you go on with your complaint.susieburton wrote: »I bought £2000 of STERLING travellers cheques from Travelx yesterday with an Aliiance and leicester visa debit. I believe that HBOS use the Visa debit system, and I believe that currently they do not charge for purchasing curency from Travelex.0 -

Your correct with your statement regarding HBOS. I completed exactly the same transaction in August 2009 but had my account with the Halifax at that time and was not charged any fee whatsover.0
