What about Charlie and Lola? My girls loved them. Harry and his bucket of dinosaurs. Lots of nice books of funny poems and jokes around - the Michael
    Rosen ones are great

My son enjoyed the younger Roald Dahl books - Magic Finger & Fantastic mr Fox. Dinosaur Cove & Mr Gum books go down well too.
  • my 5 year old loves Julia Donaldson`s books. Also Tiger who came to tea and the Mog books by Judith Kerr. Waterstones childrens departments are very child friendly and have books laid out for them to browse and often have good BOGOF offers too:D

I agree with all the library suggestions. All mine are in the library - even the youngest and she's only 2!

He'll be getting reading books at school which he may or may not like, but they have to read them. Just telling you so you can prepare your battle lines in advance!

I've said they can pick pretty much anything they like from the library and if they don't like the book, they don't have to finish it. With my older ones, the freedom has developed a love of books and reading. Also don't just look at fiction books - mine also get non-fiction books out about various random topics that catch their interest. It doesn't matter what the material is, as long he is reading something it's helping improve his reading skills.
Here I go again on my own....

Oxford Learning Tree Read at Home ( Buy cheap from The Book People) are great because most schools use that series so the characters link in.

Must say my DS is 5 next month too and we could do with expanding. Good thread )

The tadpole books are good for reading alone. Sam's sunflower.

    The Tiny Seed
Mr Seahorse These 2 Eric Carle books are delightful.

For reading to him, consider any Roald Dahl.

My eldest girl (26!) loves Charlie and Lola :o

A favourite in this house for years is Michael Rosen's We're Going on a Bear Hunt.

Also Jill Murphy books, particularly Five Minutes Peace

    Thanks everyone for your suggestions.
Currently we choose one book every morning together to read at home, but from September we dont go in their classroom so then hew will be choosing his own.
He is actually a member of the library, and i feel quite dumb for not thinking of that option!
I also want to buy some books too.
I've been trying to find some Oxford learning tree ones at a good price, we both love these ones, reminds me of my school days lol

Another vote for Horrid Henry and The Gruffalo here!

    I tend to buy online, usually http://www.thebookpeople.co.uk http://www.redhousebooks.co.uk and there's also http://www.bananas.co.uk

Don't forget quidco for the book people and red house.
I find the book people are really good for sets of books, and I got a couple of story books (as in multiple stories) from Book People last week for £4.99 and £5.99. I'd seen them the day before in Borders for £12.99 and £19.99!!!

My 5-year-old loves Winnie the Witch books as they're funny and the pictures are great. I bought them from the Book People (I think there's others in the pack too, The Dog Who Could Dig and The Fish Who Could Wish, which he also loves). :)
