Tell the buyer the item has been broken/stolen/burnt in a fire/flood damaged, apologise, and issue them with a refund?

(then I suggest you don't re-list it for a few weeks, just in case they're watching your accout...)

Failing that, say you sent it. It won't arrive (obviously), refund paypal. Only lose out on listing fees.

But you didn't hear that from me.

See this is why the world is so dishonest. If you lie then you get away with it. If you tell the truth you'd probably get a negative i.e. you're worse off. It's no wonder people lie all the time.

Calm down every one, i see myself as a great e-bayer, yes i messed up on the shipping costs and i will be sending the parcel by courier for 16.00, i don't like lying to people and if i did lie i would feel so guilty. I will learn from my mistake and from now on i will weigh my items before quoting shipping costs.
I have been e-baying for 5 years and i pride myself on my good feedback, honisty and speedy delivery. Yes this time i have lost out money and the customer will have to wait a while to get their parcel, i will e-mail them and explain what has happened and hope all is ok.

Well I have been in this exact situation for a similar amount, which is why I have Royal Mail pricing tariff above my desk and accurate scales. When this happened to me I simply took the costs on myself. It's wrong to advertise you will do something for a set price and then let the buyer down. Just take the hit, hopefully learn from your mistake, and move on. I can't believe some people would do some of the things that have been said in this thread.:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

    And one more ....

After 5 years i would have thought you would check postage costs before setting a price......

Surely telling a white lie is wrong?

In the end, at auction is an agreement and its better to fulfill your end.
If the cost is completely unfeasible you should be honest and offer at the best price you can. If you are going to lie, then maybe you should be selling things on dodgy back street markets. Sellers who lie and get caught give the whole system a bad name. And remember - if you are honest and cant agree with the buyer, at least you can resell the item and not look like a fraud

    Good for you

I agree with this, especially if there is not too much of a delay. I personally would understand and if not in a massive rush, would not hold it against you at all!

I think this thread has uncovered the darker side of the ebay! lies, damned lies and feedback
