I assume it's the backround to web pages that you're referring to?
You can change this where a background colour is used in the html code rather than a background image.

In IE7 (other versions Of IE should be similar) you can change the colour of text and background by going to
    'Tools' > 'Internet Options...'
    On the 'General' tab -
In the Appearance section click on the 'Accessibility' button
In the pop-up window tick 'Ignore colors specified on webpages' then click OK.
Back on the 'General' tab -
In the Appearance section click on the 'Colors' button
In the pop-up window untick 'Use Windows colors'
You can then set your own choice of 'Background' colour.

In Firefox 3 you can change the colour of text and background by going to
    'Tools' > 'Options...'
    Click on the 'Content' tab
Under Fonts & Colours click on the 'Colours...' button
Untick both 'Use system colours' and 'Allow pages to choose their own colours...'
You can then change the 'Background' colour to one of your choosing.

But be warned you can make things worse... if you really want to!

That's great, i've changed it to a dull grey and it's much better to read now.
I've got a problem with my eyesight and any bright or harsh colours can be painful over long periods.
Now if i can sort out these people who insist on driving with full-beam !!
Thanks very muich for your help.
