best value sim-only PAYG? Can I number port?

I've just been made redundant and I want to keep my number (had it 10 years) and work was paying my bills. I would rather not get a contract as I'm HOPING to get a new job within a year in which case not worth getting a contract as new job would give me a phone.
So do PAYG's let you keep your number - I have my PAC code?
And where are best value offers? I talk quite a lot as will be job hunting...say 500-100 minutes and 250 texts?
Thanks!

ps I may be an idiot and should get contract anyway??

Why dont you try SIM only contracts? They operate on a 30 day rolling contract and are much better value than pay as you go tariffs. O2 have a tariff for £10 per month which gives you 150 minutes and 300 texts. Have a look at www.simmonthly.co.uk to compare tariffs.
