Aaahhh why does it have to be so hard..

Found a fab cruise, right time etc and all well BUT there appears to be no transport form where we live. We need to get to Gatwick from toraby and then return from southampton to home..if there is anything it is miles away..taxis costing an arm and a leg and tbh ive had enough before ive even booked it! Just rung national express and they wont have march dates for 2010 till jan 2010?? the coaches ive rung dont come near us and like i said taxis defeat the object..wondering if it is worth the bother!

What about getting a taxi to the nearest coach station or train station instead of all the way to your departure/return points?
Or are you saying that the cost of that is an arm & a leg?

Only you can know if it's worth the bother.

Have you tried ringing the cruise line up and asking if they have any suggestions. Many cruises include parking at Southampton and just wondered if it was possible to drive to Southampton (assuming you have a car)parking there and then getting a train or coach to Gatwick airport. At least your car would be waiting for you at the end of your cruise.

Hi thanks for the replys..Ok well this is what dh wants to do and i have said no! he wants to basically get to gatwick somehow (hes not sure how) then cruise etc and when we return to southampton then get back to gatwick for our car and drive home.

I estimate the southampton trip alone being around 4 hours there and then driving home again 4 hours..so 8 hours in total..not a holiday to me especially at the end..

Today i have rung trains, planes and automobiles..you name it and got nowhere as i said it's too much hassle so have scrapped the idea. NEXT!!

Renting a car an option ? You can probably rent it from your home town and leave it at gatwick.

    Where do you live, Torbay?

Why not fly from Plymouth to Gatwick (Air Southwest fares start at 33 pounds)? And the train from Southampton to the West Country is easy and comfortable, although not very fast.
  • i lived in torbay and been to gatwick and manchester airports
exeter airport was ironically harder if you have no car ,as no train or bus there:rolleyes:
if its not till next year you have longer to plan it:confused:

I think you are being a bit unreasonable in your expectations - you are not going to get precise details of transport in March 2010 now. It's not going to be THAT dissimilar to now though. Just see what would be involved in doing it in a month's time for example

Given the right trains you can get to Gatwick from Torbay with one change - at Reading. Ditto Southampton - at Westbury.

If you drive to one end of the trip, there are direct trains between Southampton and Gatwick once an hour - admittedly with a rather slow journey time of a bit under 2 hours.

It's all doable - up to you whether you can hack it or not. I doubt if you will find other cruise ports any easier - mostly a loy more difficult.
