HUUUGE water bill...

in Water bills
I've just received a water bill for £672.. I pay by direct debit, but get a statement every 6 months. My direct debits are £30 a month.
I live by myself.. I shower at work and the gym, as I cycle to work, and go to the gym every night. I only use my shower at the weekend. I've checked for leaks - and there doesn't appear to be any (meter isn't ticking over).
The Water ppl want all this money off me, but I can't possibly have used so much water! Does anyone have any advice on how I can tackle this?

You're not connected to a neighbour are you? Wouldn't be the first time... Or the meter isn't actually yours... I'd make sure the numbers tally first of all i.e. make sure the data wasn't put in backwardsStarting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j

How much water have you used, and over what period?
Is this a bill for 2008/9 i.e. arrears over and above the £30 monthly?(approx £1,000) or does it include the estimate for 2009/2010?0 -
do you know if its a radio control meter were they can read it from outside cause there is 2 of us and my water bill has gone from £18 a month to £38 in 4 years i am in a dispute at the moment with united utilities cause i know we cant possibly use as much as they say,and we too have got no leaks would be grateful to anyone else who may be having this problem with these meters.0

I worked in the call centre for a water company and it is disgusting how often the meters overcharge or go faulty and overread, sounds like your neighbours are connected to your meter (a depressingly common problem). Call the water board and tell them you want the meter tested and checked, it is free to have done on site and they cannot refuse you. If a fault is found then you can claim back the overcharged money when the problem is resolved.0
