As far as I am aware the dog only needs to be micro-chipped once. You can then edit any micro chip contact details via the paperwork that the person you buy from(I assume its a breeder?) gives to you. Make sure you get that piece of paper!

The current owners should have details of the registration number and contact details for changing the ownership and address from them to you.
The chip is just a number (I think) with the details held on the central register.
Not sure if they have to change the details or whether you do - I have a vague memory of my mutt having a form to send off - a bit like a car!

    Enjoy your new pet.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

The company that microchipped out cat charges a £5 fee each time you need to change information.
A very proud Mummy to 3 beautiful girls... I do pity my husband though, he's the one to suffer the hormones...
Krystal is so smart and funny and wonderful I am struck dumb in awe in her presence.

Thats correct. When the vet scans the micro-chip it just comes up with a unique registration number, they then check their database for contact info

    Thankyou for all your replies.

THe dog is KC registered so I presume when they pass this paperwork over to me it will contain all the info I need. I also presume I just then contact the Kennel Club to change ownership details.

Please correct me if I am wrong, I like to have everything in place for peace of mind.

The database is held by Petlog - no idea if the kennel club own them or are just associated with them though.
You need the microchip code which even if it's on the animals paperwork I would recommend you get your vet to check for you to ensure that the chip is not only still in place but also that the paperwork is correct (easy mistake to get a 0 too many or too few :) )
You will have to pay a fee to change the registration details :)

We got our dog from the RSPCA and they told us that you can pay Pet Log £10 and they will make as many changes you want for no further fee for the life of the dog. I think it may be £20 over the phone but £10 on the internet or something like that.
We have already moved once and changed the telephone number so already got our tenners worth!

our dog is chipped and its with Petlog, we paid 10.00 a few years back and it allows you to make as many changes as you like.
We moved address and made those changes and then when we went to America on hols and a member of the family took her we made a temporary address change so if anything happened when we were away they would be contacted and not an empty house!
Did the same when she stayed with my parents last year.
