Perhaps I should have started a new thread, but hope someone can opine on this.

I've just had to go through this with Santander. Just replaced my Abbey-branded card (6 months old) with the new Santander-branded one, but still had the 'Call 0845xxx to activate'. Had to sit through spiel (don't remember doing this the first time). My question is this: I didn't ask for protection, so by what right does Santander have to pass my details to CPP (person on phone started by saying he was CPP)? I'm away from home at the mo; when I get back I'll try and find the agreement I signed to see what's there.

It's bad enough having to sit through this, but when I'm paying for the call...!!

Also, what would have happened if I hadn't called? Would card still have worked?

No, I hung up on them and called back and they said it's not activated.

A good line to get em to shut up is that you work for a bank.

    Nuns! Nuns! Reverse!

  • I activated a Barclaycard yesterday. It was via a premium rate phone no which was via the CPP conmen who tried to sell me Identity Theft protection. After firmly telling them twice, "No I don't want it", I contacted Barclaycard and told them that it was a con and that I was considering cancelling my card, they immediately gave me a £5 refund.

If everyone did this, they would soon stop using these "organisations".

I activated my new Barclaycard a few months ago, they started on about Key Protection and what would happen if the wife and kids were locked out of the car on a rainy country road etc....lol I'm not joking.

  • I had the same recently with a Santander card

Ten-minute spiel full of scaremongering statements such as:

"Do you know that your personal details are kept on government-approved databases?" (er.. how else do you pay tax, vote, etc?)

"These days it's so much easier to get credit." Really? The poor guy has obviously not been allowed out of his cubicle in the past two years!

The best bit was that after asking me to confirm my name, address and date of birth, he then told me that all a fraudster needs to steal my identity and apply for credit is my name, address and date of birth!
