External hard drive - what size?

Hiya guys, sorry for the silly questions....
I want to back my laptop up onto an external hard drive rather than 4000 discs! I have an average amount of iTunes files and photos, and don't run any programs other than the usual MS Office etc so there won't be an unusual amount to put on there.
What would be a good size hard drive to get?
And would I be able to restore my lappy if it all went wrong from the hard drive i.e in the same way as making back up discs?
Lappy is about 6 months pld and runs on Vista
Thanks
Sx

I've got a 500gb one for the same reasons as you want one for, its a freecom and does exactly as it says on the tin!
Its peace of mind0 -
External hard drives are so cheap now it is more about how much you want to spend rather than capacity0

Well I've only looked briefly on Amazon.... I think they had a 500gb for about £40 and a 1tb (a trillion bytes!?) for £75..... I don't wanna spend loads, but don't wanna spend too little and not have enough space.

If you're on XP double click 'My Computer' then right click the primary disk drive, probably called 'C:' total disk capacity wil be shown on the 'general' tab.
On Vista, go to start menu, then computer, then right click the main driver, 'C:' and again disk capacity will be shown.
Buy something bigger than that and you're golden!0 -

why not buy a 1TB drive then you wont ever run out of space0 -

I have an 80gb one for my small amount of needs (Freecom) It is reliable and has been that way for the 3 years I've had it.0

Have a look at eBuyer. I recently bought an external (via USB) Toshiba 1TB (1 terrabyte) for about £70. Since then they've just come up with a TB1.5 for £60-ish - incl. delivery. Just plug in to power & USB & you're away
. Mine's about the size of a normal paper-back book. Very quiet. Use just as you would disks but a lot less hassle.

I would go for the largest you can afford. No such this as too much backup storage space
