Overdrawn by £4.38

1st time in 2 years having had our bank account with natwest, we have a basic account (step account) and what sent us over was paypal payments through ebay.
We left enough money in the account for our new direct debit (pet ins) and forgot all about 2 paypal payments, thus it took us overdrawn by £4.38.
I decided to check at work to make sure the new direct debit had come out. Discovered being overdrawn at 4pm and managed to borrow £10 from someone at work and went and put it into the account.
I then went and asked at customer services if we'd incure any changes, they said the cut off time is 2pm to put money into an account and not incure changes (had i checked banking this morning, i would of dashed to the bank in my 1/2 hr lunch break - typical).
But they could see no charge on my account and said normally its pretty quick to go on. They said i might have escaped the charge, especially that i had gone in on the actual day and put money in to bring it back into credit.
Im to check online banking tomorrow and if no charge has been added i've escaped it. Though if a charge is on they said to come back into the branch and they'll try and sort something out.
Im really nervous as we've been so good and im hoping that counts if a charge is added, that maybe they'll take it off for us.
Anyone work for Natwest who can shed some light on this???
(also do you think its wise to have a slight overdraft just to prevent this, even though its only been this once in 2 years, we don't have an overdraft as where in a DMP and were encouraged to have a basic bank account)

Is it your first time? They will more than likely reverse the charge if so and you explain the situation. (thats if they even put the charge on)
Lloyds sent me a letter when a DD failed (my first ever one for phone bill, oh dear). I then went into branch, put enough money in to cover everything, asked if I would be charged and they said no as it was my first time0 -
Thats what i am hoping for, especially as that when i noticed the error, i was quick to fix it.
We went overdrawn when we 1st set up the account, direct debits came out before wages had been switched over.
Since that 2 years has passed, no mistakes, until now.Mummy to two girls: October 2013 and February 20160 -
yes it would be a good idea to have a small O/D buffer for situations like this - ask the cashier when you are there - this will also show you are taking steps to avoid charges in the future which scores you a few points when they decide if charge should be waived0

The cut off time is 3:30pm - you wont get charged if you pay in before then0

After being with Lloyds for 20 odd years and never gone o/d if I ever did and they charged me, I'd close the accounts.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.

Congratulations. Would you do the same with the next bank? What a pointless statement. Lloyds TSB have a reasonably fair charging policy in comparison to some of the other banks.Anything I post is my opinion, so from time to time I may be wrong. I try to provide answers based in fact, however I don't know everything, so (like all posters on MSE), take what I say with a pinch of salt.0 -
A & L charged me for being overdrawn a few years ago.
I had deposited cash in the Post Office (No local A & L branch) for a cheque I was sending by post to a company in the south of England that evening.
The cheque got to my account before the cash.
After some strong words about my doubts on the reps parentage the money was refunded.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0 -
Well i escaped being charged, don't know why but the order of transactions have appeared differently (they 1st appeared yesterday as direct debit, paypal, paypal = - £4.38, then i checked when i got home and had £10 as paid in with £5.72 credit)
Now its showing i put in £10 first and then has the direct debit and 2 paypal payments coming out after and thus being in credit by £5.72.as to why it has changed its order, but obviously happey about not being charged. Phew...
