Laptop is running much better since I did CCleaner last night, just hoping someone can advise if everything looks ok (I am googling the things I don't understand on the log - i.e. everything! But haven't found anything dodgy as yet). I am also unsure how to scan with Avira as administrator.

Also, is there anything else I need to add to the PC protection? Thanks for looking and for the time you all give to help on this board.

    Starting the file scan:
    Begin scan in 'C:\' <OS>
    C:\hiberfil.sys
[WARNING] The file could not be opened!
[NOTE] This file is a Windows system file.
[NOTE] This file cannot be opened for scanning.
    C:\pagefile.sys
[WARNING] The file could not be opened!
[NOTE] This file is a Windows system file.
[NOTE] This file cannot be opened for scanning.
    Begin scan in 'D:\' <RECOVERY>

These are nothing to worry about, they come up every time with Avira.
    Move along, nothing to see.

Thanks for the reply, so I don't have to run a scan as administrator then? I couldn't find anything in their help files to tell me how to do this.

I forgot to add that I also added spybot s&d and full scan - nothing detected.

I have worked my way through the list on Hijack This and think the system is clean, if anyone thinks I've missed anything please let me know.

This is my first PC and I never did IT at school so have been on a steep learning curve over the past couple of weeks after one of those bogus 'you are infected, dowload this now' messages. I didn't download anything but realised my protection was lacking, in fact the bogus thing did me a favour lol!

    Thanks again.

ooja - your java is out-of-date, you need to update and uninstall any older versions(which may be vunerable to exploitation). Will have a scan at the HJT log just now....after a fag :)

nothing looks too untoward there, but I'd disable Spybot's tea-timer facility...it ca be a right pain in the proverbial...

...and make sure to use the immunise feature, that's good ...

Make sure you use the 'Immunise' feature, many seem to miss this.

Another to have in the armoury is SuperAntiSpyware (Free version).

I'm no expert on Hijack This, but nothing leaps out, (prepares to be embarrassed).

Thanks for pointing that out, will look into getting an update. Thanks also for casting an eye over the HJT, can breathe a bit easier now! I will disable the teatimer, I had read to do this but wasn't sure wether to do it on installation or later, will get on with it.

spud17 thanks for the SAS suggestion I will also get on with that. I missed IT as was a couple of years too old, my sister got to do it but always said it was Boooooring! My friends teenagers scare the life out of me with their knowledge, when they laugh at my lack of knowledge I point out I can spell without a spellcheck!

davidmt83 - yes, it worried me too, but all I've done on my system since this incident is research pc protection and try and get everything sorted. I don't dowload anything, too scared to download an avatar in case it's dodgy lol!

Thanks again for all your help guys, very much appreciated. :D

ooja - you can disable tea-timer from within the meus/options within Spybot..

to update java, go to control panel - java and find the update tab ;)
